Coon Hollow Rd. short and sweet...

My objective today was to ride Coon Hollow Rd above Philbrook Lake and to see where the limitations would be due to snow from the storms earlier in the week. Let's just suffice to say that Coon Hollow Rd. will have to wait until next year. The morning was a beautiful fall morning, cool and crisp, it really felt good.

I began hitting snow about half way between Stirling City and Inskip.

I stopped here just to take in the view and give thanks for the gifts and pleasures I've recieved in life. A moment of reflection so to speak. I do a lot of that during my rides. Especially when I ride alone.

Another view.

Humbug Summit Rd. where it splits from Skyway. It doesn't look promising.

I made it to Philbrook Lake turn off and decided this would be as far as I go. Pointless to continue as I was just going to keek climbing in altitude. Here it's about 5500ft. Looking where I wanted to go.

Looking where I had come from.

Coon Hollow Rd. will have to wait until spring. Not likely I'll be doing any high altitude riding anytime soon but that's not to say I won't try. Parting shot bike porn.

From fall to winter and back to fall in just a few short miles.
Ride on everyone and post up those summer rides you all did. Going to need them to get me though the winter.
Ride on.

It was pretty warm yesterday so the road may be cleared up. If memory servs me I think Bald Mtn. is only 5600 ft.
Have fun and be safe.

2nd Attempt at Coon Hollow rd.

Well, got together with BanhXeo and Rio (sorry don't know his screen name) and decided to do some riding today. Our goal was only to have fun and see how far up we could get going towards the High Lakes area before getting turned around. I didn't take a lot of pics today so hopefully BanhXeo and Rio will chime in and add to this. I know BanhXeo took some pics and video of our 100 mile ride. It was also a nice break-in ride for his brand spankin new sweet assed KTM350. Nice bike! but here's my sweet little reliable KLR with a little fall color.

Ok, here's that sweet KTM.

Rio's riding a Honda CRF250CR. Nice bike but no plates, no lights. I only have some action shots of him so they'll show up a little later.
Quick stop while heading up Concow Rd. Prior to getting here we started out by meeting at Jaki's Hilltop Cafe in Magalia for breakfast. Sorry no food pic, ya'll already know I suck at this. We rode over Jordon Hill Rd. with a short side trip to Sawmill Peak Look Out. Jeramie should have some pics to post of the view. It was an awesome fall day for a ride. Couldn't have been better riding.

We rode up Concow Rd to Bald Mtn. Lookout having a blast. I've said it before, that road is an awesome ride for fun and views, I don't think I'll ever get tired of it. Jeramie should have some pics to post of the view from that lookout also. So we went on up the road and soon discovered we wouldn't make it to High Lakes, made a left instead of a right at the fork in the road and headed to Philbrook Lake, Jaramie has pics here also. Next decision was to try Coon Hollow Rd. again. We were game to try and get as far as we could but it again wasn't meant to be. Turned around by snow. The next few pics are of where we turned around and heading back out.

Rio on the CRF and Jeramie bringing up the rear.

Jeramie

They're up ahead of me somehere.

The snow was about a foot deep and some drifts up to about 100 yards long, It was a pretty good work out for a fat old man to get through but I was having fun. I also know it's pointless to continue when you start running into one drift after another. We had to think about fuel range and daylight hours so the smart thing to do was turn around and start heading back.
View looking west towards the coast range from Concow Rd. not far from Bald Mtn. Lookout

Just a shot of the hillside on the way down Concow Rd. Nothing special here other than and appreciation for where I was at.

Jeramie and Rio making the creek crossing on Concow Rd.

Rio making his way through.

Well, that's all I have.

The rest of the ride was about getting back on the gas that these 2 had and I was letting it hang out. I came to realize that my riding has once again much improved this year, I'm surprised at what a little lower gearing and a little better suspension has done for my riding. Awesome day riding guys, now add your perspective and pics.
Ride on....

Awesome Day! I was looking forward to this ride all week, we knew the storm that came through was going to be warm and short lived so we met up in Magalia early Sunday. I decided to take the scenic route up Centerville road. Apparently people in the canyon got 1 hour more sleep on top of daylight savings ending
[IMG][/IMG]

One of our first stops was Sawmill Peak Lookout tower.
[IMG][/IMG]
[IMG][/IMG]
Can just see the Sutter Buttes rising over the haze.
[IMG][/IMG]

I should note here that our original game plan was to take Jordan Hill Rd. to Oakway to Concow, but sierra pacific had signs up and we decided to do the responsible rider thing here and rode all the way down through Concow and took Concow road from its origin on dirt. (Ok a mile of pavement as well) It was a great route in itself so we won in the long run.
Our next stop was Bald Mountain Lookout. This place is just amazing, if you haven't been here..GO!
Here's a nice look at Mt. Lassen.
[IMG][/IMG]
Mt. Shasta and Lassen ( Small patch of smoke in front of Shasta)
[IMG][/IMG]
[IMG][/IMG]

We headed towards Philbrook Lake..
[IMG][/IMG]
[IMG][/IMG]
We stopped here briefly, the turnoff to Coon Hollow Rd was just above the lake.
[IMG][/IMG]
[IMG][/IMG]

We were on the shaded part of the mountain, we kept plowing through the snow, drift after drift..
[IMG][/IMG]
[IMG][/IMG]
[IMG][/IMG]

Were in the clear!
[IMG][/IMG]

False Alarm.. We ended up turning around here as we had plenty further to go before it doubled back and we were out of time and fuel.
[IMG][/IMG]

Was a nice crisp ride back from up there [IMG][/IMG]
[IMG][/IMG]
[IMG][/IMG]

We arrived back at our staging area high on life and ready for a little rest before the work week. I took off down Skyway, gassed up and headed towards Chico. I was eager to see the Canyon I rode up through on Centerville Rd early in the morning. Its been years and years since I took the little time it takes to pull off at Lookout Point, take a deep breath and give thanks for the wonderful world we live in... Enjoy Life

Laugh Thanks for posting that Jeramie.

Interesting. I haven't stopped at that overlook since they redid it. I need to "stop and smell the roses" a little more often.

From Rio spelled Rhio

That was a great ride. We covered about 98 miles round trip. Other that me not making the right turn offs a couple of times it was fantastic. I really need to get a GPS as all the roads seem to look alike once you get way up in the mountians. I wish we could have gotten up higher, We will have to wait a few months for that. The Highway 70 Pulga road is a great access point to head out in the winter months. Lots of waterfalls and lower elevation make it into some great riding. I

If anyone want to explore that area I know it very well. You can go for 4-5 hours and not hit the same road twice other than a couple of spots. email me at

rhiosride@yahoo.com

Thanks..Rhio Chico Ca.

we'll be in touch. I am planning on doing some riding through the winter in the area you speak of.
