Doesn't the motor sit lower in the R65? I just wonder about dragging the valve covers. The R80 motor will be wider, but I don't know if it's enuf to matter.
I ride with a short guy occasionally who rides an R65/80. It gets his tip-toes on the ground but it seems to drag hard parts before my /5 does.

I don't have a motor yet, but am on the lookout for a cheap one that hasn't been molested. It is a long term down the road project, but I really want to do it. Maybe I'll get lucky and find a cherry R65LS in trade for my 1973 CB350F....
or some other nice Airhead....

A R80 engine will bolt right in. The exhaust won't work but the R80 exhaust can work with some setup. Don't plan on cornering very hard. Twin shock R65's are a LOT lower than the other models and those longer cylinders stick out like wings (or road hooks depending on the situation). I have setup a few 850 kits like wireworker has. They are savage. It involves modifying the R65 engine into a super short stroker. The cylinders are bored out so far that the nothing but the fins are left on a good portion of them until you put the liners in. The liners rust were they are exposed. Talk about cylinder wall instability! I did it because it was my job but I wouldn't recommend that set up to anybody. I have heard tha you can get nikisil R65 850 kits that work a lot better but you are still going to have a bore/stroke setup that can't take advantage of the heads OR the valve train.
I forgot to add that R80 engines do run noticably stronger than R65 engines. I always advise to not pay very much attention to BMW's power ratings. Why a R80? If you are going to put that much wider engine in, why not make it a R100? The biggest bore that enigine is real good for IMO. supershaft screwed with this post 11-14-2012 at 11:40 AM |

It's in Oz, but seems like a nice get for someone wanting one.

I am pretty sure you can't for the push rod tube angle but why do it to start with. The stroke is then way too short for the heads and valve train regardless.

Even if they're shortened? I thought I've read of people doing it.

People do do it (pun intended). That doesn't make it right. Those pushrod seals barely work when everything is lined up right.

Wouldn't it be easier to take and R80 and swap the relevant bits over?
