my lemon gs did it again

after having paid several thousand of dollars for the ABS module...something broke again...this time its the starter...
i've been using the bike for days since i arrived, it was running smoothly....i was running an errand and decided to use the gs for the short hop...when i started it this particular morning, i heard a faint squeaking sound...several feet before going out of gate the engine stalled....and when i tried to start it...nada....the lights dimmed and the clock reset to zero...needless to say i was bummed(i just paid megabucks for a repair and this thing wont start)...i thought the bmw guys forgot to tighten something...called them and was told that it might be my battery or my starter, so i told them that it cant be the battery since ive been using it for days and it was cranking really strong...so he suggested that it might be the starter...and that the magnets in the motor might have gotten dislodged..(WTF)....dec. 31 i decided to operate on the starter and this is what i found....

the starter after removing

sure enough, two magnets were dislodged and got chewed seriously...

some serious damage to one of the magnets

one of the dislodged magnet

the rotor got some scores

some deep gouges on the rotor

handed over the job to my brother in law who really like to tinker with things, just provided him with enough beer to do the dirty job, cleaned the housing, removing those tiny magnets bits is a real pain...he did most of the job....glued the old magnets back...and reassembled the thing while i do some cooking for the new years eve(the wife is down with a flu)....checked on him at around 7:30 pm...still having some trouble with the starter motor...it wont turn....another half hour, he decided to add spacer to the brush to push it more downwards and voila....by 8:30 i had the gs started and purring again...total cost...10 b0ttles of beer at about $1.50 each...$2 for the glue...

ps...

pic of the brand spanking new ultra expensive abs module....

Slick repair!

Mine did the same thing a few years back.
magnets were too crumbled up to reuse, so I ordered a new housing with magnets, and the updated design has metal clips along with glue.

they have all of the other starter parts too!

some saturn cars here in the US use that same starter motor too, so you can find one at a salvage yard for cheap

the gear housing and nose is different, but the motor part is the same.

you missed the slave cylinder, fuel pump, hose inside the tank, plastic quick disconnect, TPS, clogged injector(speaking from experience, all of these happened to my bike.)

The ABS hydro unit is repairable by Module Master in Idaho for $300.00 or less with 5 year warranty.

Drive shaft is rebuildable. There are several sources for this service.

Starter is rebuildable with parts that are rather attractively priced. Mouthfull showed the link to starter parts.

Mandon, your brother may have a new career rebuilding starters. What brand of beer were you furnishing to him?

Those aren't gouges, they are removed material for balancing.

Mine from the other day.

Bummer about your starter. How many miles on it?
