Lambda sensor broke off/2010 990 adv.
Problem: lambda sensor separated from rear header, the welds popping off.
I think I can find a welder to fix it, but let's diagnose the problem so it won't happen again. I assumed the bolts had loosened. But when I examined I found the header bolts tight but the head pipe had enough play inside the flange that I could wiggle the pipe easily. I imagine that play over time is the culprit. But why is there play? Should there be some sort of metal ring that slip fits inside the exhaust port on the engine to prevent this? I didn't see one. The bike is a 2010 with about 2,500 miles on it. I installed a Remus titanium 2-into-1 exhaust. Last, I'm running a Power Commander V. I found the lambda sensor wasn't connected. (Assume the shop that installed the PC V did this.) Thanks! Ted |

There is suppose to be a sealing crush washer. Take the header off and check for it. Usually it stays in the head. Also, there is a washer that goes under the flange to angle it better. Most make the mistake of putting the washer on top off the flange under the nut. Only one washer on the outside of the pipe. Your parts manuel should show it.

So I had my rear header also crack around the Lamda sensor and there were no washer (#7) between the flange and head as pictured below.
![]() Bike is also a 2010. I'm wondering if it's a manufacturing issue?

I just assumed that my old, clogged alleged brain was to blame. That I'd left off a washer or insert or something. But, maybe not.
Nice to know that maybe I'm not getting senile. Deranged yes, but senile no. ![]() Thanks! Ted |
