Headlight Low Beam Too Dim on 99 1100GS

I rode my 99 GS at night for the first time yesterday. The low beam was so dim it was like riding without any light at all. The high beam was very bright.

It looks like a sealed beam headlight. Is it? Does a headlight wear out? I would think that it would be at a constant brightness then burn out, not slowly dim. Do I need a new headlight or is there something else I can do?

Your suggestions are appreciated.

Standard issue in the 1100's is an H4 55/60w bulb, not a sealed beam. Did you check to see if maybe the low beam did burn out and what you had was your parking / running light for illumination ? I seriously doubt that you are getting a slow burn out, especially since the high beam works. To put a new H4 bulb in, which are fairly chaep and the easist way to check, takes about 10 minutes...everything goes in from the front of the bike.

I probably was using my parking light. It was so dim, my turn signal light was lots brighter. I'm glad to know that it's an easy fix. I'll order the new bulb.

Don't order a new bulb, just take the old one to your local Schmuck's, O'Reilly's or auto parts store if you're unsure of which one to buy off the shelf.

Look for the PIAA or Sylvania Osram

bulbs. There are different brightness bulbs. But the brighter the bulb, the shorter the life.

New headlamp bulb available at any autoparts store.

Just ask for an H4 lamp....about $5.00.

Thanks everybody. I went to the parts store this afternoon and got a bulb. It was a lot easier to change than I thought it would be.

How is it riding at night now? Was the bulb the issue?

The best money I've ever spent on modifications to any bike is additional lighting. The stock GS lighting isn't as bad as some, but if you're going to ride any distance at night I'd highly recommend additonal lights. After a lot of research and saving for a while I ended up putting a set of Clearwater Lights ("Glenda" style) on my 1150 and couldn't be happier. They come with everything you need for mounting low an the fork tubes, are small but super bright LEDs so hopefully they'll last forever, and best of all they have a dimmer. You set the output with the dimmer switch on low beam then the lights automatically go to full power when you switch to high beam. I live in Virginia where there's lots of traffic, so this feature appeals greatly. If I lived in a place with sparse traffic I wouldn't mind having bigger lights mounted higher, like under the beak, but here that would mean I'd never get to use them with all the on-coming traffic. I am convinced the additional lighting makes me much more conspicuous in daylight too; I feel I have fewer people doing stupid stuff in front of me now with those super bright lights to catch their attention.

I'm saving money now toward a set of phasers to vaporize deer.

I didn't get a chance to ride it tonight. I'll try and get out tomorrow night. I'll report back and tell you if the bulb fixed it or not.

Hmmmmmm...why don't ya just turn on the headlamp and tell us if it works? We didn't want you to ride it....that's too dangerous.

What's the fun of just turning on a head light? I had to go out and see how it lit up the night.

That's right, even though I was in my nice warm house and it was cold out (45 AZ cold but still) I had to go for a ride. I took a quick little 20 mile ride and the light worked just like it was supposed to.

Peer pressure is such an ugly thing sometimes...

Glad the light bulb was the issue - I'm no good with electrical issues and it seems those get more common as a bike ages.

I've pre-ordered my deer phasers, anticipated shipping date July 2032. Hopefully I'll still be alive and riding by the time they get here. Fooking deer will still be around, they seem to get more numerous by the year. Maybe we need to reintroduce wolves out here? Worked in Yellowstone...
