My friend in Larned, Kansas has one. He has 250 miles on it. The next nice day I'm going to ride it. Its VERY heavy.

Well, it might be due to several factors. A somewhat 'enthusiastic' riding style, a few bugs in the injection mapping software (it is a new one), an extremely conservative low fuel sensor (showing empty when there's still a third full), etc.

If you would trouble yourself to contact a dealer, I think you will find that the opposite is true.

All reports indicate that the bikes are flying off the showroom floors, and the bike appears to be a (Guzzi-sized) home run.

All I ever see you post is negative comments and things you don't like.

Do you ever post about things you do like?

Nobody knows why that journalist reported such low fuel economy numbers.

The fact is, though, the Cal 14 is not languishing in showrooms, so your correlation is a fallacy.

p.s. Guzzi is much more than "The Harley of Italy". Much more. Other than air cooling and pushrods, the two companies could not be farther apart in just about every area of comparison.

I can't believe the 23 mpg is accurate. If the bike got that low a mileage, MG would never have released it.

As for mileage, I only know what I experienced when I rode one (again, see the last page for my write-up).

I averaged 29 and a bit for the day and was getting in the high 30s on the freeway at 65MPH on a relatively flat stretch of road.

Guzzis typically get better mileage once they are broken is (this one was under 1000 miles total), so I would not be surprised at better than 30 combined and over 40 on the open road at only slightly over legal speeds.

I kinda agree with the Toad's assessment of motojournalists, to a point. Their job is to find the edges of a bike's performance. On my brief test ride of the CA14 I discovered that the bike is a joy to flog! The torque is similar to a HD, but it puts out 50% more HP and has twice the rev range.

I was in 4th gear on the freeway, checking out passing power. Sure; it'll accelerate from 65mph in 6th, but in 4th it'll pull hard up to 80+.
I suspect if one were to cruise at the speed limit it would get MUCH better than 23.

My R12GS averages well over 40 on long trips, but my worst tank ever was only 28mpg.

Was just reading a thread on another forum and the dealers who chimed in noted mid-30s is what they're seeing on the Cal 14 demos.

Crikey, mid 30's isn't very good, and I doubt that they are loaded up.

I have a V11 Sport (which I love), and thats a gas guzzler to. Not a problem on that as its a weekend cafe, but it is an issue on a tourer with a 5 gallon tank.

Looking forward to seeing some road tests.

Injected Guzzis are not known for high fuel economy numbers.

35 mpg and 5 gallons is 175 miles. That's about the range of my V11 LeMans.

I'm sure more info will be coming out as new owners start posting on the forums.

I wouldn't hold my breath for 50 mpg, though. If you can get an injected Guzzi to average 40mpg at lower elevations, it's doing good.

My Nero Corsa averages 38 mpg here at 1000-2000 feet. When in Colorado at 6000-10000 feet, it will return mid 40s, almost 10 more miles per gallon...



p.s. you'd think after the Stelvio fuel tank fiaso, Piaggio would've learned that consumers want range. I think this Cal 14 should've had a six or seven gallon tank, if not eight. Especially since its benchmark, the Road King has a six gallon tank and returns mid-40s.

It's not just good looking, but also surprisingly high-tech. And Guzzi doesn't hide it under 'retraux' make-up like other brands.
