I must be crazy

including the Rebel 450 I bought for my wife last year, I have bought 5 bikes, 2 of them new, in just over 2 years. 25 Months to be exact.

The other day I contacted my credit union and filled out a credit app for a recreational vehicle (motorcycle) just to see what it would look like. They approved it. So now I am kinda sorta tossing around the idea of buying a bike - AGAIN. Price range up to $20000. Not all of that would be borrowed.

I really like the VTX. Complaints with it are pretty minor. The bags are small, don't lock, and they aren't weatherproof. I just put a Mustang seat on it, which is a huge improvement - but I figure I could sell that and get most of my money back - but I would probably just buy another seat for the new bike. Reliability, well it has stranded me once, and almost another time. I still think there are some issues. I just put a new battery in it, but when I checked my trip meter this morning, it had reset itself to 0. I expected it to show 35 miles or so since the battery was installed. I have broken off two bolts already, they seem to be made out of cheese.

Anyway here are the bikes that have caught my eye:

ST1100 - if I could find a lightly used cherry example
ST1300 - local dealer has one priced under $13k, NOS '12 model, I am concerned about the heat issue.
CTX1300 - looks very good to me, not sure I like the sound
Triumph Thunderbird LT or Commander - getting really good reviews, always wanted a Triumph.
Suzuki V-Strom DL1000 2014 - I loved my old DL1000, this new one seems so perfect in so many ways - but it's a bit tall and a bit ugly.
Valkyrie or F6B - probably out of my price range, and probably bigger than I want
Harley Davidson ??? is it time I finally bought a HD? Road King, perhaps?
Super Tenere ?? Yamaha build quality, shaft drive. Tall and Ugly
Kawasaki - I can't find a Versys 1000 anywhere
Nomad - beautiful bike, lots of features, great build quality - heavy, and a bit pricy for what it is IMHO

What color CTX1300? That is the coolest bike on your list. You can buy all those others used. A Vstrom, why, you like camping?

09+ Road King, bought used, will have great resale when you change your mind next week.

Otherwise I'm really happy with my Yamaha and would look hard at the Tenere or FJR.

The Rebel 450 is an awsome bike. I'd buy one if I could.

I suggest you buy it from your wife.

Second best would be getting an LTD500.

don't know about the color, but I think it is black - I have just seen it on their website. I prefer the red version of the CTX.I am finding it hard to ignore a new ST1300 with ABS for $12994.

good point on the resale value....

I love the FJR, but it's out. My wife would not ride it with me. After looking more at the s10, I really like it, but I think it is out too. Biggest issue with it is the seat heighth. I am 5'10" w/ 30" inseam.

If I was looking to add a bike and still keep the VTX, the NM4 would be a contender - but if it's my only bike, I want more motor than 670cc.

Meh, I'm 5'10" with a 30" inseam and I ride a Triumph Explorer with no problems, can almost perfectly flat foot both feet when stopped. Go ride the bike before knocking it out of the running

Very few cruisers will beat the LTD500. Maybe a V-Max would.

I can understand wanting a big bike, but I'm just adding my $.02 in having you consider something smaller, but not slower.

The Kawasaki has the same motor as my EX500 and that thing was fast. Not GSXR fast, but fast.

If you're keeping the VTX I'd go for something as different as possible.

SuperTenere is a do it all bike, and now for '14 it comes with standard cruise control.. I'm on my second Tenere. Miles with smiles and zero issues.
