Thanks for all the good advice and pointers. I am just about convinced that taking the route via Birdsville is not a good idea this time of the year. Heat can be managed by drinking lots of water regularly, but I am not looking forward to digging my GS out of bottomless mud bogs after a spell of rain.

Don't risk it if you have any doubts.

There is plenty more country you can see at that time of year, and Birdsville shouldn't be going anywhere in the next few years so it can wait.

May still do Bourke to Hungerford pending on weather. If the roads are dry, will give it a try.

I dunno Bombardier. Despite all the naysaying on here I reckon your planned trip is emininetly doable - to me the risk factor is the rain, but if you miss it the ride is pretty much a doddle.

I did almost exactly the same ride 30 years ago two-up on a GPZ1100, but a month earlier than you in the December. Yep, we had a fair few hot days, and a few torrential showers too up in FNQ.

Bit more dirt in those days too, however, it was a great ride and one I'd definitely contemplate again in summer.

Keep a eye out for the Min Min lights - I never got to see 'em.

Podge, i will be in Byron bay trying to surf. It's shaping up to be a long hot summer 45 most of next week in Longreach probably nudging 50 around Birdsville. You blokes are mad!

And if you haven't seen the Min Min light, just pull up at the Middleton pub between Boulia and Winton for a session. Your guaranteed to see it and more.

(12) Kennedy Developmental Rd was closed a few months ago. Probably still is.

Have researched Min Min lights. Very interesting - I am sure we will see them! Anybody been through Hungerford? Can you sleep over in the Hotel?

Yep.

Its very "rustic" but I found it comfortable...

Except for being woken up at all hours of the night by a couple of trucks stopping to go through the gate.

I think it was fairly well priced to, but I can't remember how much it cost me at the moment.
