DR advise

I am a very excited fella, I am locked and loaded for a round the world trip which I will begin in June.
I am doing the deal on two new DR's for the trip.
I have got a couple of prices with set up that includes 30lt safari tank, suspension mods, screen bark busters, you know the usual farkles.
I am wondering about gearing and any other mods that are worth while. I am of average skill, on my big beemer, my friend has been riding road bikes for ages but has limited dirt experience. We are hoping to get our bikes asap so we can get them all sorted and get Susie dirt time.
We plan to go to cape york next winter, across the top of, broome, petth, then into asia. I reckon I can afford two years on the road. Yar freakin woo!

I like my 08 DR and rode an 8000 mile loop down and back thru Mexico last Feb/Mar with no issues.

I run 16 tooth for Hwy and 14 for offroad, keep the stock 15 for spare.
Bought most stuff from Procycle.

Stayed with us for a few days, great people.

They have not had good luck with their 2011 and 2012 DR's, countershaft seal failures on both bikes (cases were over machined requiring replacement of engine cases) and Third gear failure twice on one bike (first repair was improperly done in Montana requiring do-over in California).
They purchased bikes new in Alaska (USA) and discovered warranty not valad in Canada and Mexico or elsewhere??
Luckly 1st countershaft failure occurred close to USA border in Canada and they limped across for repairs under
Warranty but have lost 6 weeks of the past 6 months waiting for parts/repairs.
They're now in Mexico hoping all issues are fixed.

Ride safe and enjoy your trip.
Stop by and stay awhile if you are in Northern California.

Eddy that is awesome news! I think the dr is THE choice for something like that. Maybe we will catch up around the top end although with the craziness in my travels I have no idea where I will be by then.

I have a similar setup for the DR - did 15000 klms across Oz and back to the east coast in Oct 2010 and did Cooktown and return (with pillion!!) in July this year (4 thou klms) - my only suggestion - get your clutch plates upgraded to something heavy duty - like Goodrich - if anything goes, it will be the clutch. Other dilemma will be hard or soft panniers - I have used both and there are so many 'fors and against' for each, I still have yet to make up my mind.....windscreen is also a must for long trips - Eagle screen was brilliant...any other queries, drop me a line - cheers

Outstanding trip planned, jealous for sure.

Based on my DR experience and OTTOMH, make sure you loctite the nsu screws, rearrange the plumbing and filtering of the Safari to the carb so you can use all the fuel and get a countershaft seal retainer from Procycle. While you are doing the NSU screws, loctite the primary drive nut on the crank too. Depending on your racking arrangements, the tags on the subframe need beefing up, the rear lhs one in particular won't take a lot of punishment. Some of us have had premature failure of cush hub bearings, so keep a close eye on those and maybe consider a bearing upgrade. Some case armour might help too. Another gotcha is the choke cable. They get crap in and corrode and jam up. Easiest to put an aftermarket low mount one on to sort it before it becomes an issue.

Procycle in the US and Vince Strang and Adventure Moto locally can help with stuff.

Don't forget the chain roller as well - they generally look after themselves but I reckon better to get them off early

Yeah forgot that one, upper roller. Take it off and plug the hole, which seems to do the job, or beef it up like I did if you'd prefer it was there. If it takes care of itself it can/will remove some frame which is not ideal.
