Harvesting Your Cultural History
This story is about petroglyph thefts in California. I am posting this in the Rockies Regional thread because I know there are tons of resources in your area.
My guess is that a rich criminal from who knows where is paying for pieces of our cultural heritage for their private collection. They probably see that we are short on budget, and are taking advantage of it. : http://articles.latimes.com/2012/nov...theft-20121119 If you are riding in areas with petroglyphs or other pieces that could be cut from the rock, carried away, or otherwise damaged, please keep an eye out for suspicious activity. In this case, it looks like someone brought out a gas powered rock saw, and cut the petroglyphs from their rightful places. The government can likely stop them, but only with eyes everywhere. That part is up to us. Good luck.

Your link was busted- I think this is it:
http://articles.latimes.com/2012/nov...theft-20121119 It's horrible that people would steal / ruin petroglyphs. We'll have to keep an eye out. |

We're starting a Site Steward program in the Boulder area with volunteers assigned to monitor areas of archaeological interest, including petroglyphs.
There are site steward programs in other areas needing volunteers. Some are run through the Forestry Service and some through private groups.
