xr650l oil issues

Ok I am new to the dual sport motorcycle and I purchased a 2012 xr650l. I ride it daily and my first service was at 900 miles +/- . The Honda service guys said that was no problem. Got the bike back and they said to bring it back in approximately 4000 miles. Well at a total of 3700.05 miles she stopped running. When they looked at it there seems to be a lot of problems. First no oil leaks anywhere (Frame, engine, or anywhere). 2nd they were only able to remove less than a quart of oil from the bike. The piston is scorched seized and missing some pieces. Lower section is unknown at this time.

The question I have here is should a person have to add oil daily or weekly for a bike that is brand new? I have several other Honda motorcycles and have not had to do this to them. (2006 rebel 37850 miles, 1976 CB750F1 Purchased in 2010 with 4300 miles and has now 26,646 miles)

Honda warranty is looking into it and I still have not heard if the regular warranty or the extended warranty is going to repair it.

More details would include that of the total 3700 miles only about 300 are off road. and the bike was purchased in Atlanta and ridden in Atlanta since the last of August.

Any help would be appreciated and critisms are not so helpful but I understand.

You should always check your oil before every ride or it least every other ride. If you had Honda look at it and they said it looked fine when you got it back then they should take care of the problem. But again you have to do preventive maintenance also. They may look at it as you did not do these things and put the blame on you. But then again that what dealerships do...they pass the buck!

If you run a thumper at highway speeds it will burn some oil. I've got an XR650L and if I run it hard it'll use some oil. No way I'd go 2000 miles without checking my oil. I check it regularly. Good luck with getting Honda to take care of the problem.

when i bought my xr650l new i got home and checked the oil and it was about a quart low, luckily i took it easy, i dont know if the dealer didnt check it or what, anyway my bike used oil from the start. maybe about a half quart every 500 miles. after about 3 or 4 thousand miles it used less maybe a quarter of a quart every 500 miles. after 60,000 miles it stayed the same at about a quarter of a quart or less every 500 miles. i had tons of xrs and they all used oil so i always checked them every few hundred miles.so it looks like if you didnt add any oil it used it till it didnt have enough to keep the motor cool. i think they should fix it under warranty though.

1 Quart!

It shouldn't sieze with 1 quart of oil left in it. You sure they put oil in it and not something else. How about sugar in the gas tank.

It's to late now but you should check your oil level every time you fill up the gas.

Thanks for all of your inputs. I am making changes to how I ride and service. Funny how I did not have to do this to the other bikes but I guess different bikes means different methods.

i'd never trust dealers/ others to maintain my machine.
