Some toothpastes are more gritty than others. I have used them when rubbing compound is not available for small projects (it does work ok for plastic headlights). I would say use with caution on non visible area because I would think some of it could take the shine off a helmet

If rather severe, get some 1500 grit wet/dry and essentially "color wet sand" the scuff. It's the stuff they do cars with before buffing. Or use some rubbing compound, but not too coarse. Then some polishing compound or Flitz. Finally some wax or polish. Flitz works great for those little scuffs like bumping a door frame or the like. As I said in the one shield post, I've used Flitz to fix a scratched CD. Rubbing compound or wet sand will take care of deeper actual scratches. Just go to the really extra microfine wet/dry. It is almost like coarse rubbing compound.

I just let so many dead bugs accumulate on my helmet that scratches are no longer visible.

Never really thought of it.
Sometimes while cleaning the bigger bugs off my faceshield, I wipe off surrounding "donors" from some of the helmet. But my helmet has flat finished graphics so I don't really detail it much ![]()

I usually use gravel, trees work well also..................
If you apply sufficient force during your dismount grass and/or dried leaves will help buff some out.

I just cover the scuffs with more scuffs, and maybe a sticker.

This stuff, VERY fine finishing polish, rubbing compounds make paint dull, this polishes. I have even used it on scratched faceshields, also fixes scratched CD's.
A bottle lasts forever.
