Saturday Maple Festival

We ended up going to Monterey to the Maple Festival then ran up to checkout Laurel Fork but the road in was solid ice so I will run the 990 up there soon and check it out after things have some time to melt, I will get out Sunday after I get the 530 back together,

I made it up around Lexington today, unplanned. Saw someone else on KLR (blue/white 2012 model) on Rt 60 as I was heading east. Any of you guys?

I've been seeing an older BMW around. Never with a rider on too though, always parked. This weekend really got most of us chomping at the bit for spring. I think we need to start looking at a time for a group ride.

Is it a K100? There's a guy in town with one of those. I met him once, can't remember his name.

Yeah, I'd be up for a ride soon, I think. Baby's due quite soon so I may be limited, plus I'll be out of town next weekend. So who knows about me...

it might be. I see it at CVCC, it's probably a late 90's early 2000's, yellow in color.

Anyway, I broke both my rear turn signals and want to replace them something smaller and low profile that fits within the edges of the cargo rack.

Any thoughts?

Ahh I've seen that. It's a R1200S, I think. K bikes are inline. R bikes are the opposed twins. Nice bike that one is, saw it at LU too.

Check KLR650.net forum about signals. I've never messed with them but there should be many options.

Damn, I miss the T-Room. Always fun at 2am for a cheesie to soak up the crappy beer.

Too bad I only had a street bike when I lived there, could have had more fun.

Have to be in BV until 11:30 tomorrow and then I am going to take a ride anyone going to be around? I might run up to Laurel Forks again if I don't do dirt.

Talking howdy

Hey everyone,

I haven't got a bike yet :(. With an 11 month old and a wife im saving money as I can. I can't wait to be able to get a bike and catch up and ride. I live out in Goode, in between forest and Bedford. Anyways, I have a huge question to ask(I only know one person w a dual sport so I want more opinions). I am only 5'6 and about 160-165, I fit perfectly on a honda crf230l but im worried about not having enough power for around here. I want to commute to and from work(15 miles one way) which speed limit is 55 and 45 the whole way. I like the dr650 and the klr650 but they are too tall. Should I go w 650y'all and lower it or just get 230l? Also is it expensive/hard to lower a 650. Input please?
Thank you and I hope shortly to be riding road and trails w y'all!

Lowering the KLR requires no more than switching out the linkage. I assume the same for others. New links are $70 or less. You can also get a lower seat or shavethe foam off a stock seat.

230 or 650?

If this will be your first bike and you plan to ride back roads and trails then get the 230 it will do 65mph for short trips and be more fun on gravel and trails but if you will be on the hyway much, bigger is always better just remember a DR650 comes in at about 350 dry thats a heavy bike to learn on/pick up! As Mava says lowering is simple and cheap. Good luck

Thanks for quick reply. This will be my first bike.would I be able to do group rides or ride on the parkway on a 230? The only thing that deters me from the klr650 is thefact that it's liquid cooled, I'm wondering how the maintenance is on it.

Liquid cooling isn't anything new and doesn't require much. Pretty simple.

I'm sure keeping up on the 230 is no big deal. There's other factors though. I have one bike so it has to do it all and the KLR is that. Decent wind protection, decent road bike, decent off-road abilities, etc.

KLR is an excellent bike. Very comfy once you do something about the seat due to the great ergos. As said before, a great do it all bike. Also, fairly inexpensive and super easy to work on.

I agree with AB13 the smaller bike will be alot more fun on the forest roads . It will also be easier to handle until you get more miles behind you.
Unless you plan on taking long trips with your bike the 230 should be fine.
