a blog on the selection of Heikki over Valsecchi
certainly an Italian spin... but of course why have a third driver at all if not willing to use him?

F1: The Valsecchi Case. Lotuss strategic error, the lack of power and a slap in the face to racing

Posted Nov 15 2013 in Formula1, Sport News, Sport Sponsorship

Today, in a big column in our top sports daily journal, Andrea Cremonesi noted how Davide Valsecchis No is a slap in the face to the entire Italian racing community. Cremonesi, who said in 50 lines what many have been thinking for years, raised important questions that will need to be answered sooner or later. Why is a third driver needed? Why not set rules on driver rotations? Why have the sports powers (meaning, the Italian ones) not closed ranks to support Davide?
I would add another question to the ones listed above: how come Boullier, Lopez and company chose not to use Valsecchi but prefer Kovalainen? Lotus management plays the experience card. Heikki is an expert driver who can bring championship points. Its hard to believe, at the least. The Finnish driver, who is a likeable and very funny bloke, is however a mediocre driver who didnt make a good impression in McLarens time and now drives a Caterham on Friday. Sometimes. Hes not exactly a top driver. On the contrary, Valsecchi made a good impression at the Silverstone tests, he won the GP2 and he definitely is hungry and wants to be seen. So, if not now, when?
The most obvious answer is that Kovalainen brings along a good allowance: an important characteristic in the current situation in Lotuss finances. If that is the case, two distinct arguments must be made. On one hand, as Cremonesi does, we must ask why someone in our country didnt stuff a bag full of money and stick it under Valsecchis belt. On the other hand, it is important to understand strategically what Lotus was thinking at the time.
Lets explain. Italy is one of the cradles of racing. The love for Formula 1, MotoGP and everything that has an engine and some wheels is unconditional and across the board. And yet, while we have given the world great names and brands of engines, for years we havent had an Italian driver in the top series. We are a nation of fans with no one to cheer for (except for Ferrari). If Lotus gave the wheel to Valsecchi, Italian attention and passion would have quickly gotten behind the black and gold. If it then had been leaked that Davide was actually, after the last two races, also in the running for the seat in 2014, Lopezs team would have become the great Big Hope of Italian racing. In economic terms, this is something to be considered. To be able to count on a large, knowledgeable and enthusiastic fan base is one of the fundamental cards to play with various sponsors and partners.
So, in terms of both interest and money, more consideration should have been given to Valsecchi. What led to Lotuss decision isnt clear, but there must be a reason and an excellent one, I imagine. Regretfully, there is no Italian driver in the F1 and an opportunity was thrown to the wind.
Too bad.

He gets on the list by default, as I don't see how you can't put a guy who's won four championships at his age on the list, but we are in complete agreement about him as a driver. It's much easier to score runs when you're starting on third base, and he has been gifted with a brilliant car, and a fantastic team with for all practical matters an unlimited budget. There are at 6-8 drivers on the grid that could be on championship #4 if they were in Vettel's enviable position. I thought it was hysterical a few races back when he was being pressured in the final ten laps and squealing like a schoolgirl on the radio to his team.

The great ones have always outperformed their hardware, and found a way to scrap their way into points and podiums by wringing the most out of themselves and the car, even when the car isn't very good. We will likely never see Vettel in this position, and may never really know what he's made of, unfortunately.

I was lucky to have been able to spend a little time with Felipe Massa this week during a brief stop in Houston, where we were involved with Scuderia Ferrari and Hublot for the opening of their new Houston boutique, and we had to pick him and the group up and accompany them. I have always been a huge fan of Felipe's, and I'm very sad to see him leave Ferrari. He is unbelievably nice, very humble and down to earth. The fact that he travels to races with his father says a lot about him. It was funny walking through the Galleria mall in Houston with him in a Ferrari jacket, in relative anonymity! It's a shame that he didn't get the championship in 2008, because he drove brilliantly in what was clearly not the best car on the grid, and took Hamilton right down to the wire. That was really the last fantastic season for the sport IMO. Felipe has always seemed like the underdog who just didn't ever give up. The way he would get in the face of other drivers after a race to stand up for himself will never be reflected in statistics, but this is what I love about Massa. The end of the 2007 European Grand Prix and his exchange with Alonso is priceless!

Vettel's not a passenger, but for me he doesn't belong in the conversation with the all-tine greats.

Talking I thought his name was Bert, Ernie was wrong!

Ferrari, Mercedes and Lotus opened the ropes and let us in the front of the garages, Took a ton of pictures and they answered questions and were really cool with us. Fernando didn't talk to the Marshals, just the press.

Did I count 23 controls on that wheel, plus the steering?

I am happy the USGP is such a hit. We need more F1 fans in the US so we can get better coverage.

Here's a pic with Felipe dropping him off at his plane heading to Austin from Houston.
