Creating routes for a GPS

I have an iGo GPS unit which I believe takes *.gpx file format routes.

What I would like to do is plan a ride on my computer by tracing a map and then load this in my GPS. What is the best way to do this???

creating routes

I prefer to create all my routes right on the gps unit itself, because then the routes are much simpler to revise as you ride. I use paper maps, highlighter, googlemaps, google earth and whatever to plan .... but build the route on my Zumo 550.

I prefer google maps to design the route. Easy to see on my computer and by using Terrain view I can tell where the roads get interesting. Also by using the Streetview or Satellite view I can look down a road and tell the condition.
Get Walking directions between two points and then drag the route to snap to roads you'd prefer.
Walking directions always seem to give me great non highway, crow flies routes and then I tweak to add in curvy roads as needed.

Tutorials are in the sticky section above. I use GMaptoGPX and wake that up in Basecamp and transfer to a Montana.

Would you mind explaining how you revise them as you ride.
I'm guessing you are dropping waypoints and letting the gps route you.
