Heading south from Weiser, Idaho, to Carthage, Texas. Any good suggestions for routes?

OK , headin' south. Sounds good, although it hasn't been too cold yet.
IMHO the best paved road south, out of Idaho, is Mountain Home to Elko to Carlin an on to Eureka and Ely. From there many options. Around Eureka the elevation is high. The valleys are 5-6000 ft. but it is dry. From Ely you can head east on 50 then angle south east at the state line thru Minersville to Cedar City. This sets you up for Zion Nat Park and south Utah. I also like south from Ely to Vegas. High sagebrush ranch lands. Good Motels in Eureka and Caliente. Truck stop motel on 50 at the UT/NV border, right by Great Basin Nat Park.

US 191 is pretty fantastic for it's entire run, runs all the way from Montana to Arizona. If you don't feel like piece-mealing something together from other roads, it's a guaranteed great ride the whole way.
