Really long range ice tire ideas

Would y'all please weigh in on some ideas for long range ice tire/stud combo's for a 400-650 cc DS bike towing a 125 lb sleigh. Not worried about tire sizes, just a setup that won't generate too much carcass heat, distortion or stud loss over an all day, sustained 80km/hr ride.

I'm talking serious expedition type mileage...like 3500 km or so that would include everything from hard black ice to 20 inches of snow to slush and a bit of mud for spice. Zero gravel or asphalt.

I can't say any more yet as this is still a pipe dream/cloak and dagger/subject to funding project but if it happens it will be in late February/early March.

Are those Trackmasters on the KLR. I've got half a dozen or so of those kicking around the shed. What type of studs, how many, what mileage and any issues with lost studs?

I'd go with the Mitas E-09's and the Aerostich carbides.

So far so good...

JB, got any pics of your snowchain setup. I've considered them but I think the carbides might work better for this application although now that I've mulled ot over, a low profile chain rig does have promise. You are so right about the sled whip. I've got thousands of km on sheer ice with both bikes and snowmobiles and have engineered a way to keep this from happening at speed. It's true that 20 cm of snow is stupid hard to ride in for long distances but that's the absolute max and I'll have no choice anyway where I'm going.

Groves, one of my bike options for this thing includes the KLR but you can't get bike snow tires in 17 inch (that I can find). The Mitas/Kenda tires are both made with rubber compounds specific to cold temps so my question is, does anyone know if the carcass and rubber compounds of some of the other DS/MX tires out there match the Mitas/Kenda snow tires. If I end up using a bike with a 21/18 combo it won't be a problem but the a KLR or Suzie rig is a different story. My greatest fear in this is breaking off knobs and/or spitting studs 250 km from a human footprint at -35.

The 'stich carbides are perfect for 90% of this but there will be a few sections where I'll need something gnarly-er and unfortunatly it will be the most remote ones. Yah, I know I'm being vague and difficult but until the planets align on this I'm going to keep my mouth shut.

Yes, I will be contacting George about a proper set but for now I need to explore every other possible option.

I don't know how long they'd last but Trellborg are about as gnarly as they get.

Just snow, ice and maybe some mud, I'd go with agressive knobbies and 1\2 or 5\8 ice studs (just like Groves). 1\2 and 5\8 is the length of the threded section, not the stud itself.

Carry 50 or more as spares in case some get thrown. Unlikely if gravel and asphalt are never encountered.

Sounds like you're considering a gnarly route, so the lighter the bike the better, perhaps.

That link to the Mitas tire is very interesting, it says that it is the tire formerly known as the Trelleborg. I know someone that has at least 4 seasons (winters) riding on a set of those. The joke is that with him along on a winter ride we don't need to pack saws to take care of blow-downs, he can cut them with his bike! That's an exaggeration, but, they are gnarly! I put screw-in studs in a set of S12s for the winter and after a couple of rides, generally half of them are missing from the rear, and I am pretty gentle with the throttle.

Going with Gripstuds. They seem to be the ideal set up for this gig. I'll be using the 1200-1300 series for the road sections then switching to 1800's for the sea ice run to Rankin Inlet.
