Being a 950 noob myself I can only share my shortlist.
1. Does it run? 1a. learn to check your oil every ride until you know the bike 2a. same with coolant 2. tank guards 3. service up to date? 4. start planning for fuel pump, water pump, clutch cyl replace. 5 ride it 6. see 5 7. oil change 8. ride more 9. preemptively fix known issues, repeat riding. thats where my list is so far. |

If you are going to ride a lot of rocks, a good solid skid plate like the Black Dog, and a sidestand relocation kit would be money well spent.
If you like to ride fast in rocks, a steering stabilizer has saved me numerous trips to the hospital. HID lights are good too. The Rekluse clutch is awesome on the big bike. Wide pegs are really nice. Aux fuel tank is nice. Well, you get the idea, you can really go crazy on mods with this bike.

Bike is in good running condition with 21,000 miles. The info i'm looking for is at what mileage should I be concerned about the fuel pump, water pump ? I hear about the fuel injection system needing work as far as not being very smooth what is the fix ?
thanks |

My 2 cents
Read these forums to know how to fix the common problems you mentioned. Most of all ride it and don't worry about issues w the bike. It's limitations are most likely not the problem.
My 07 has 47k of thrashing. It begs for more. Enjoy. |

Yep. Don't worry about buying a bunch of expensives add-ons. It does just fine stock. You will determine which, if any, mods make sense for you sometime later.
Just add fuel and enjoy.

congrats on the 990! I grabbed an 07 this past july and I've been so stoked and that's an understatement. Denalidirt said it really well. This forum is an incredible resource but it can get ya a little paranoid because it is way comprehensive with incredible depth and lots of very experienced and smart people adding to the knowledge base. So I am sticking with everyone's most important and emphatic comment....ride that shit!
