Storm Drains in Irvine, Calif

On Father's Day, my dad and I took a ride through sections of Orange County, CA not normally seen by the public. I forgot my camera that day but came back today and snapped some shots. These are shots of the storm drains of Orange County, CA. Found some mud, rode some virgin sand washes (when the storm drains ended), blasted through tunnels galore, and had some serious fun until I flatted my back tire in one of the sand washes.

Here's the beginning. All pictures taken with my cell phone.

Found some water in the sand wash proceeding the storm drain.

Right before the concrete drains.

Riding here felt like the chase scene in Terminator 2 without the hauling ass part and no semi truck behind me. This was after the first mud hole underneath an overpass.

Other view of mud in tunnel.

The drain ended and I had to negotiate this cemented rocky section. I had to dismount the beast and walk it up while fanning the clutch. I did not want to dump it and bust the case open on these rocks. As you can see, I don't have the best off road tires. Two guys were hanging out here playing with some RC dune buggies (duffle bags on the right are theirs).

I turned my beast around and headed up the virgin wash. This was a tight wash!

Some Irvine Water District tank on the right.

Further along the trail. There was an abandoned archery range up here. Cool!

End of the trail for me. This was a huge wall. I want to come back on foot later.

What would be the ticket amount ($$$) for riding in these by the way? Unbelievably, there are no "no entering/trespassing" signs at both ends of this when entering from the sand washes.

Interesting report, thanks. I ride my bicycle on the San Gabriel River bike path. It goes under several bridges and there are a lot of strange-looking low-lifes living in those places, too.

yeah, me too. Bernardo Yorba and Esperanza ('87). Im hoping to get back to So-cal in the next year or so.

I use to play in some of those tunnels when i was a kid. there is a long tunnel that starts from kinsbriar and exits north of Yorba Linda blvd. Its a large enough pipe for a motorcycle, easy.

Pipe start
N33.880196,-W117.787313

pipe exit
N33.88982,-W117.783544

about half way to Yorba Linda, the pipe decreases in diameter, but its still 8ft or so. There is also a 30'ft incline (about 20 degrees) which could be tricky.

so, who's up for an adventure? Just dont go if it looks like it might rain.

Revisiting my old thread today. The area in the last four pictures of my thread is completely gone now! It has been replaced by a paved Alton Parkway. They completely ripped out the sand wash, the cement boulder climb, and replaced it with pavement. You can drive your automobile past the Irvine Water Tanks now and dream how things used to be. So glad I did it when I had the chance! Google Maps is not updated yet and it only shows the construction, but it is completely gone now. Wow!

I guess there's always this opening...

I took this one on my mountain bike today.

It got pretty tight.

And wet.
