Route des Grandes Alpes (Great Alpine Road)
As part of a trip around northern Europe this year I'm looking to take in the Route des Grandes Alpes. A couple of questions, How long should i allow to take it all in 3-4 days? Are there any recommendations of where to stay along the route? As a new comer, if I'm in completely the forum /area, please shout!
Many thanks Jon. |

Take 3 day minimum, there is a lot to see.
And ride some other cols because there are more fun roads around. There are a lot of hotels and places to stay so do not make reservations. Only when you are there is high-season when everybody is on holliday. This year i will be around Alpe d Huez for the second time. Lats year i drove from Swizerland to Huez and did it in 1 day because i had to participate in a briefing. That was to much to enjoy the scenery.

You can do it in two but as hockey' says, take three.
L'Auberge Provencale in Sospel is a nice place to start or finish and though it's not cheap at €75, it does great food.

I'd recommend 3 days. If you plan to be there in July/August, be sure to book lodging in advance if you can...because you won't be alone.
My personal favorite section is southbound from the Cormet de Roselend to Bourg-St-Maurice. The best kit you can take with you is a GoPro, with a 32 giga card. Your friends and family will hate you for not taking them along as they watch your vids.
