Possible recall for 2005 to 2008 R series
Not sure if this has been posted before but I was just looking at the most recent recall from Ford and saw this tidbit.
LINKY Safety Agency Investigating Fuel Leaks in BMW Motorcycles By CHRISTOPHER JENSEN The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating whether it needs to recall about 24,000 BMW motorcycles because of possible fuel leaks. A report posted on the agency Web site identifies the models as the 2005-8 R Series. The agency says it decided to investigate after receiving 28 complaints and seeing additional reports on Internet forums of cracks in the fuel-pump housing. There was no mention of fires or accidents. One owner, who complained to the safety agency in September, said that when he arrived at his destination he noticed a strong smell of gasoline and “my left pant leg with soaked in fuel.” He found a leak in the fuel-pump housing “in close proximity to the vehicle’s left exhaust pipe and ignition.” |

It would be good to see a better resolution on a similar fuel concern for plastic-tank Ducatis. Seems to me if your fuel pump seal is affected and leaks gasoline onto the rear header. . . it may be a concern.

Yes, I know. Just saying that any leaking gasoline over an engine or header is pretty serious. In both instances, the 'issue' has been known for several years.

I have little to say
|
Does somebody have to be seriously injured or die in order for action to be taken?
Fuel system leaks on a motorcycle with fuel injection and a high pressure fuel system can be serious. Thinking out loud here, I would speculate that the NHTSA will give relatively low priority to a motorcycle issue where there have been no property damage or deaths reported. NHTSA....a bureaucracy in which I have little faith. |

If these issues were from an automotive manufacturer, it would be front page crucifixion in many public media. I am not that close to the GS years affected here, but the recalls I had on my GS were 1) proactively communicated to me from BMW, and 2) resolved with superior parts and/or techniques as in the case of lever interference on 05-07 handguards. Seeing how something similar played out with an Italian manufacturer made BMW look like heroes, as nothing was communicated through NHTSA or Ducati NA. Until I received legal notices it was a class action lawsuit.
