I turned 43 this year and got back into dirtbiking last spring, picked up a mint 2003 XR250R. Felt like a kid again on it. I live in the northeast so I do a lot of woods riding so speed is not a factor. The little XR is great. I did an enduro in June after spending maybe 8-10hrs "practice" riding, had a ball and even managed to finish without timing out. I learned it pays to stay in shape cause it was a tough two hours.

The XR is a great bike, reliable, easy to work on, and parts are easy to find. The suspension is soft, but I'm having it rebuilt over the winter.

Good luck with whatever bike you get and have fun with it.

Remember: it is more fun to ride a slow bike fast than a fast bike slow.

Start with an easy bike, trade up as your skills develop. You will also learn more from riding different bikes as you grow.

What ever you get try a Rekluse in it.

I'm 53 and have a Husky TE450 and a DRZ400e. The DRZ in my opinion is one of the best trail
bikes made.

As said eariler it has a tractor engine and ultra dependable. That being said I prefer
riding the Husky. Better power, suspension, brakes and when you peg the throttle it's a beast.
Ride it hard and it goes through rear tires quickly.

Having said that, it also has a Rekluse auto clutch and throttle cam. It makes it very
easy to control in tight situtations. You can hold it in place on a steep hill with
the throttle and when you want to move just roll the throttle slightly and away you go.
You can putt around at 2 or 3 mph without having to manually slip the clutch.
It makes it very easy to negotiate the most technical sections of a trail.

And, it really will reduce the fatigue that can come from riding powerful
dirt bikes.

The only thing wrong with it is that it can be a little pricey, but in my
opinion worth it.

We'll just have to agree to disagree then...I don't think it's the same thing. And a $2900 plated 450 EXC certainly qualifies as a cheap and light bike to learn dirt riding on

Anyways...I would certainly counsel the OP to look at bikes that make him tingly and want to ride

I hate this saying...if you're good enough to ride a slow bike fast, then why the hell would you be riding the fast bike slow.

I'll take riding a fast bike fast over a slow bike fast any day of the week

Spot on.

My Husky also has an auto clutch, and I regularly get schooled in the woods by my buddy on his green DRZ400S...but I couldn't imagine selling my Husky for a DRZ (he's just a better rider than me, and DRZ's are decent mounts that won't hold back a proficient rider)

Thanks for the tip. The forks are so much better than anything I have previously owned, I haven't noticed anything to complain about. I'll get in there eventually, though. I'm stuck on powervalve voodoo for the time being.

Not when your budget is "$2K max to purchase a bike. Old is fine by me." Cheap would be more like $1K in that context.

Because:
  • you missed the point
  • you're not as good as you think you are
  • the faster bike is more difficult to get the best out of
    (kinda the same as the above)
  • the supposedly faster bike is actually slower for the given conditions
  • it's referring to how much of each bike's potential you are using, at the same speed
Pick one or maybe all of them... that's why 50hp motards are so much fun compared to 100hp sportsbikes: purely for shits and giggles!

Make sure you ride with full body armour i came off in an ITALIAN river on an KTM 400 EXC good bike.Saved my leg and foot,just black and blue. O and i'am 65 years old,
