I'm really interested in doing this ride next year, but I'm not sure if any of my riding buddies will be able to get the time off?

I'm not a big fan of riding off road alone............so do you have any suggestions for getting together with like minded riders to do this ride?

Cheers

Thanks for the question, Droptarotter. It came up this past season as well, so I wonder if there's potential for an ADV dating service ...

You began in the right place: here.

A signup or response thread of your own in ADV's "Trip Planning/Americas" thread might work for you.

You might also post your proposal in ride reports that you'll find here, here, here, here. and here.

A few points to emphasize:

Many inmates will have difficulty allocating two weeks for the full route. So Heart of the West ADV Route was substantially revised this year to seamlessly incorporate a number of rewarding, interconnecting "sub-loops" that accommodate shorter time frames -- say, a week or so -- without compromising the quality of this experience.

These shorter loops, as well as the full loop, are logistically convenient. They make the route even easier to access and exit from any compass direction, and at any number of locations.

No one has to commit to the full route; everyone can enter and exit as he or she wishes. That may help broaden the pool of candidates you can recruit, as 2013's multistate, international roster of riders -- many of them rendezvousing from distant locales and meeting each other for the first time -- demonstrated.

It's also designed to accommodate special routing requests, which I usually can facilitate.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you need anything more.

Hey Droptarotter, I am in the initial stages of thinking very seriously about doing this route this year either alone or in a small loosely coupled pick-up group. I am an old, slow rider with plenty of time available to schedule and do this ride. My bike for this would be my 02 KTM 250 EXC Racing, i.e., a small displacement four-stroke. Probably wouldn't do more than 150 to 175 miles per day and, if conditions permit, would like to camp as much as possible along the way. If you're interesting in exploring further send me a pm. If not,

Awesome, Klinquist! I'll get it to you right away.

There have been major upgrades to the route since Dockingpilot's inaugural run in 2010, including some in just the last few months. You'll get the latest version, of course ... with all future upgrades to follow as your ride approaches next season.

Wendover, UT/West Wendover, NV, has been a good place for West Coast riders to bookend their ride. Best choices for lodging there are the casinos, which have allowed folks to park their haul rigs securely till they return.

Don't hesitate to shoot questions my way, and let me know if I can help.

Tony;
Good suggestions........and you wrote what I was thinking.......but did not know how to word it..........a dating service??? For me, I don't want to get into a Brokeback Mountain scenario

AugustFalcon.........keep in touch, but I still have to try and nail down my riding partners........so you just never know how plans might pan out for next year.
Drop me a pm if you wish.

Cheers

I was just looking back at my photos and remembering how fantastic this ride was, even with the challenges of the unusual rain.

I can't thank Tony enough not only for creating the route but for being there in real time with advice and re-routes to make the trip the best it can be.

I hope you don't mind me posting a few of the pics here, just in case anyone is on the fence about doing the route.

DO IT!!

My full report is in the link in my sig.

My wife and I hiked today through some of the chilled, snow-frosted labyrinths just outside of Moab, Utah.

For decades now, she and I have traveled the dirt roads of Utah's canyon country (and beyond) in motorized fashion, doing research for guidebooks, magazine articles, and corporate and private clients.

Thus, when Heart of the West ADV Route clients ask that their personalized modifications to the route -- or their very own custom route -- include greater Moab, we get it. And we get it done.

This past season, in addition to fast-paced riders, we heard now and then from travelers who prefer a pace that lets them get to know Western landscapes more intimately. So this Thanksgiving week we've augmented our canyonlands explorations with adventures on two feet, instead of two wheels (or four).

Here's some of what awaits -- just off the road -- if we route you through the Moab area with a couple of hours to spare.

Dolphinjohn, it's great to hear from you! You are a survivor of one seriously angry September. I felt so badly for you two (from the comforts of my Adventure Cave, of course ...)

I encourage all prospective H.o.W. travelers to read your insightful -- even harrowing at times -- report.

Are you open to offering advice and tips via PM, DolphinJohn? I'm sure others would appreciate learning more from your experience as they prepare for their own.
