Let me know if you need any help. Also, I didn't see any liquor stores on your waypoints. Was that an oversight? I would hate to have to scrub off a gallon a fuel for whiskey.

Sorry for the double post. Guess I just wanted to make sure I didn't have to go a month for Kentucky straight bourbon.

There is a waypoint for a state liquor store, TxTiger. It's in Baggs, Wyoming, just north of the Colorado line (a detour off the main route, but perhaps it's worth it???).

Outlaw Liquors Sports & Video, 150 N Penland St. ... N41.033304 W107.658097

The glass of wine icon ... It's obscured by icons for superfluous stuff like food, lodging and gas.

Shooby, I and maybe others will be hitting the trail 13 September. Beer has been discussed and is a logistics priority. Maybe we can add to the beer icons for others that follow.

Shooby keeps sending me links to "Pats Backcountry Brew" website. It could either be or . Will let him try it at home first I think.

Alert: Colorado's famous swinging bridge is closed!

Thanks to two early-season H.o.W. travelers reporting in from the route, I've just learned that western Colorado's historic Swinging Bridge is closed indefinitely.

According to news reports, a ranch hand tried to drive a 7.5-ton farm tractor and implement across the recently renovated suspension bridge across the Green River at Browns Park, northeast of Vernal, Utah, and east of Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area. It's barely east of the Utah-Colorado line.

Shocker! -- the tractor broke through the picturesque old one-lane span, which had a three-ton weight limit.

An H.o.W. traveler sent me this photo, with permission to post it:

It's enough just getting a Land Cruiser across.

Read about this fiasco here.

But all is not lost!

The contemporary alternate to the old bridge is just a few miles west of Swinging Bridge, upriver and across the state line in Utah, where it crosses near John Jarvie Ranch Historic Site.

I've just updated the track file with a convenient bypass. While it's disappointing not to ride across the old bridge, the change isn't a major route change. Details and a new track will be forthcoming -- along with other updates -- in the next H.o.W. newsletter.

Finally ... 10,000 thanks to Heart of the West ADV Route travelers who report situations -- washouts, wildfire closures, tractors stuck on little bridges, etc. -- that impact the route. I will pass the intel along promptly.

What a bummer. I like that area...but isn't that bridge in Colorado?

OMG! Of course you're right, DRTBYK! It's a short distance into Colorado from the Utah line. I shall go back and correct ... then put my reading glasses on ...

I can't believe trip time is so close. I'll be heading that direction in 2 months. My first real dual sport trip. Six states and about 3,000 miles with detours, and one month living off the back of a bike on scenic byways.

I need to pull up a few "How to Pack" threads.

In Encampment now. The "primitive routes" are NOT to be missed. For those of you on the fence about doing this ride - do it! It has been truly fantastic.

Bummer... Maybe they'll have it fixed by Sept.
