Custom rerouting

From time to time we are asked to alter or shorten Heart of the West ADV Route to suit the time constraints that normal people face.

In the last week, clients who will be accessing the route from opposite ends of the country -- both facing seven-day limits on their vacation time -- asked that the route be reduced by half. We did so. Now one group will begin and end in Jackson, Wyoming, the other in Idaho Falls -- HQ of Backcountry Byways LLC, home of ADV luminaries Questor and MotoAdventureGal, launch site for last summer's Mobius chapter and (just up the road), Klim (Yes you can!). It also was the locale where Dockingpilot's crew launched their maiden run of the route.

Among the advantages of Heart of the West Adventure Route is that it is adaptable to your needs.

Below, some late-September images of little-known and even less-traveled Idaho backroads that I added to one of the custom reroutes, making a truncated but no-less-rewarding 1,400-mile loop beginning and ending in Idaho Falls:

Heart of the West route

I had the great pleasure of getting to ride with Byways this past July at the Klim rally. He took us on part of the "Heart of the West" tour from ID to WY by the Tetons. We had an awesome ride! The scenery was spectacular and the dirt/gravel roads were a lot of fun. I ride an R1200GS and found the route perfect for a big adventure bike. I would do it again in a heartbeat!

That was a terrific day, Makis54! I'm glad you enjoyed your introduction to the route.

Remember this Idaho section (courtesy of ADV's Questor, who rode sweep)?

Also courtesy of Questor ... a shot of our re-enactment of the German retreat from Stalingrad ...

And finally, Dear Leader at the Klim rally. Another Questor masterpiece ...

P.S.: We'll be heading over to Wyoming when things dry out (snow's melting fast!) for on-the-ground verification of a scaled-down alternative to the full Heart of the West route for folks who only have a week or so to ride. It will begin and end in Idaho Falls ... in many ways an ideal base.

Stay tuned ...

Idaho Falls, ID, storage and service

For those of you who plan to launch from Idaho Falls, and who may want a local mc shop of good reputation and reliability to ship gear or bikes to, we suggest contacting Ben @ Ben's Quality Cyle LLC.

Ben was the longtime service manager/KTM/Honda etc. technician for Bill's Cycles, whose owner recently retired. Ben is now an independent ... reliable, trustworthy and skilled. In fact, he oversaw delivery of Dockingpilot's crew's bikes in September 2010, when their bikes were shipped from New Jersey to Idaho Falls for the maiden ride of what was then called the Forever West Adventure Route.

Tell him we sent you ...

Here's Dockingpilot's (standing) group making pre-launch preparations following storage under Ben's watchful eye:

When to go?

The question we hear most often? "When's the best time to go?"

Our answer: mid-September into early October ... generally.

As it immerses travelers in the panoramas of six Western states, Heart of the West Adventure Route passes through climate zones that change dramatically by the day -- passes on the Continental Divide one day, mountain crests the next, long river valleys soon thereafter, aspen woodlands the day after that, then sandstone gorges followed by pine forest followed by mile-high basin-and-range desert.

So ... What's the best time to go? Take a look at these monthly weather averages for a few towns along the way, courtesy of Weather.com:

Alpine, Wyoming
Meeker, Colorado
Dillon, Montana
Idaho Falls, Idaho
West Wendover, Nevada
Provo, Utah

Predicting weather is uncertain, but we can say that the waning days of summer and the early days of fall have consistently brought Heart of the West ADV Route travelers relatively dry days of moderate temps, capped by cold, starry nights. Perhaps that is why man discovered fire, built cozy Western lodges, and today wanders the wild on DR650s, F800s and 990 Adventures ...

Lincoln Highway 100th

This year is the 100th anniversary of the first transcontinental "highway," the Lincoln Highway. And of course it's part of Heart of the West Adventure Route ...
