Tony , great job of this history lesson and potential trips for all us riders.

Your pics/story of Crooked Creek Ranch brought back many memories of my teaching at Dubois. Super great scenery, people, climate, beautiful place.

Thanks for the memories. I have alerted some Canuck friends of this thread. Sure would love to see it all over again.

Keep us smiling

Thanks for checking in, Gale. B.T. Did you notice the DB (DOO-boyz) sticker on my windshield?

Teaching in Dubois! Wow! Cherished memories, no doubt. (My wife and I met in Lander ...)

Dubois Annual Firemen's Buffalo Barbecue is August 10

Thanks Tony ,nope did not notice the DB sticker but I did recognize the Bing's Cowboy shop in Pinedale, know the family well.
Loads of memories, jocks, friends in that Pinedale. One of the neatest , greatest places to live in the West.

I am now deeper in debt to you for the memories

keep 'em coming
adios,gale

Bravo....

Tony Huegel, whom I've had the privilege of knowing for four years, is a consummate historian of the Western Migration and a master ADV route expert. Not only does he know where to go, he lives the history, the desperation, the suffering of tens of thousands of emigrants that traveled before him on every trail he explores. It's more than just a ride, it's a living history book. You would do well to 1, ride the Heart of the West trail by Tony, and 2, study where you will be riding to get the full appreciation of his research and understand what the route is showing you. When you get off your bike and you're standing at the "Parting of the Ways" in the middle of nowhere in Wyoming, look around and imagine 160 years ago, scores of fathers with a wagon-full of starved kids, were faced with the decision that the wrong turn may starve or dehydrate his family to death, it makes you think differently about what this country is made of. And decisions like that happened thousands of times all over the West.

Thanks so much, Spanker. It's hard to beat the saga of the American West. I've wondered a thousand times if the emigrants ever looked out across these landscapes and thought they were beautiful -- or just terrifying.

Hope to see you out this way again soon!

Spirit West River Lodge

A group of skilled Heart of the West Adventure Route riders who'll be moving fast and not camping just booked a September night at the Guest House, at Spirit West River Lodge at Riverside, Wyo. Rough it? Not these guys ... They save that for the dirt.

I stopped by Spirit West the other day while doing my pre-season route checking (and exploring what will be a couple of exhilarating new additions!), and was given a tour. All I can say about Spirit West is ... WOW! It's perfect for HOW!

Spirit West is very affordable. But for travelers who hate parting with a penny, there are "economy" options nearby ...

Assfault attack ...

We routinely do on-the-road checks of conditions along Heart of the West ADV Route. Good thing, too, for a recent pre-season inspection uncovered a dark plot to lay assfault on a long segment in Wyoming!

We needed a plan to deal with this dastardly act, and fast, for the season is nigh. Edward Abbey's Monkey Wrench Gang came to mind, but just briefly. So we searched around a bit, studied our maps ... and found a solution that is a thousand times better than the original: a long stretch of beautiful, meandering little dirt road with inspiring vistas.

As always, the route is being updated, and HoW clients will soon receive the latest file. That's just one of the benefits of our continuing effort to keep this dynamic route one of North America's greatest motoring adventures.
