3. I hate ear plugs - not the plugs themselves (I have good/comfortable ones from my time in the army) but I can't stand the fact of not being able to hear properly. The helmet already reduces hearing and with ear plugs I feel too isolated. Some may consider this irrational but that's the way it is for me...
4. In my experience there is no consistent relationship between comfort and noise (my HJC is a perfect fit and very comfortable but also very noisy) or vents and noise (it seems that some helmet manufacturers can design effective vents without making the helmets too noisy).
5. I love the Schuberth but it is simply out of my price range.

I did a bit of research last night and found that the Bell RS-1 scores very well, low noise levels included. That helmet would still be in my price range - is anyone using that helmet?
I'll put in a vote for the Shoei Qwest. I rode my nekkid Aprilia Tuono with the arai quantum and then bought the Qwest. A good bit quieter than the Arai, but still not really quiet.

Now on the GS/Adv, the qwest is like wearing ear plugs. Smooth air, nice and quiet.

I have an RS-1. It's my main helmet - over my Bell Vortex and my Arai (can't remember which exact model Arai I currently have - I've literally had them all). I would never ride (any distance at all) with it and no hearing protection.

What would you think of somebody who rode with no jacket, boots, and gloves because "they hate having all that stuff on". Not protecting your hearing isn't much smarter than not protecting your skin... In fact, your skin will heal from a lot of things. Damaged hearing is permanent.

Yes if I try and chat with another rider at a stop light it can be a problem but
my riding mileage capabilities easily tripled with the noise fatigue from before.
I was generally going to say about the same thing. The plugs cut down on the wind noise(use a quality plug though) so you CAN hear other things. The wind noise(without plugs) will impare your hearing after some time.

Quiet helmet

Scorpion EXO 1000 is quiet. More so behind a windshield at the proper height. I believe it comes in some solid colors. Obviously more noisy with no shield. About on par with my older Scuberth, but about half the cost.
