Question Aftermarket fuel tanks and the law

Anyone copped any grief from the law with their aftermarket fuel tank? There's plenty of them out there on Aussie roads all the time...

Been denied a VIC roadworthy for a registered bike?
Ticketed by the cops for an unapproved mod?
Or worse, been denied an insurance claim through fire etc for a leaky/split non ADR tank?

The issue came up down at my local bike shop, while getting a roadworthy for one of the other bikes. He reckons unless it has an ADR compliance stamp or similar, it could be an issue.

I've emailed the maker, but in the meantime was wondering if blokes had any real world stories out there.

I've had my Safari Tanked 950 SE passed by the local inspection station the last 2 years , not a word was said about it , he spends most of the inspection drooling all over the bike , not inspecting it .

From the NT Vehicle Standards Manual.
Visually inspect the fuel system.
Reason for rejection.
a) There is any leakage in the fuel system.
b) Any part of the fuel system is insecure or damaged so that there is a risk of a fuel leak.
c)The fuel cap is missing or insecure.

Well then I'd make an ADR compliance stamp and get it on my modified components, pronto.

No, I think the money allowed him to get off the charge of being intimate with a monkey!

A new NCOP came in to force in 2012 re motor vehicles in Australia and modifications.

National Code of Practice for Light Vehicle Construction and Modification (NCOP)

http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/roa.../vsb_ncop.aspx

The PDF for motorcycles is here.

http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/roa...Jan2011_v2.pdf

Here is a section re fuel tanks etc.

The following are Basic Modifications that may be performed without certification provided they are carried out in compliance with the requirements detailed in sub-section 2 General Requirements:

 Fitting a manufacturer’s optional component such as an engine, transmission, exhaust system or fuel tank for the particular make/model of the vehicle in question. (Note that replacing parts or components of a motor cycle with the manufacturer’s parts or equivalent components does not fall into the category of modifications and as a consequence no approvals are necessary for repair work);

 Conversion of a two-seat motor cycle to a single seater; and

 Conversion of a modified motor cycle to original seating configuration.

Note: The underlying design installation and fabrication requirements for all of the above modifications are contained in sub-section 2 General Requirements.

The Department of Transport and Main Roads in Queensland will continue to require seat conversions to be certified as required by the original version of Section LL that was published in February 2006.

I`m guessing this would be illegal then. Bolted to the rack with a fuel line going down to the return line on the fuel injection.

I have always thought that illegal was a sick bird.

Cruz, that's a very interesting link. Reading between the lines, a tank offered by the manufacturer is ok, so safari tanks which are sold via yamaha are ok??.

It also clarifies rear mudguard extension , back to 45 degrees from the rear axle ( not level with it as we ccasionally get told)
