Virgin GSPD needs mods

I'm looking at these mods:

- Diode board/solid mounts. I'd like to install the whole Omega charging system, but it's a bit pricey. I can afford the Thunderchild diode mod and the VR.
- Final drive. Can I just replace the stock ujoint with a serviceable one, or does the entire shaft ass'y need replacing? Sounds expensive. I carry a fire extinguisher.
- Tranny output shaft. I did the research, mine is circlip-free. Doesn't sound terribly expensive, except in labor terms. Cuanto es esto?
These are my top three priorities, as they can all be stranders, and I like to ride this bike. I just can't do 'em all at once.

After I get these done I'll consider chopping it into a naked dirt cafe racer.

I am currently restoring my 1989 R100GS-Paris Dakar and this is what I altered so far. Once she's back on the road, I'll see what if anything else needs doing -

1. Change front brake caliper for one of the modded R1100 Brembos as mentioned earlier.

2. Fit braided stainless steel front brake pipe.

3. Fitted a floating front brake disc. All of these mods brought the front brake performance from 'poor' to 'slightly better'. I shall check the entire front system through, replacing seals, etc, to try to get it better.

3. Fitted a Secdem front screen although the American Parabellum looks much better.

4. Fitted Touratech 'Zega' rear panniers and their brackets, much stronger than the originals.

5. Replaced the pig ugly front mudguard with the lower one.

Other mods in the pipeline -

6. Jim Cray twin plugged cylinder heads.

7. Alloy top box.

8. Better (bigger & wider) footrests.

9. Remove oil cooler from the crash bars and mount this on the frame.

10. Replace rusty spokes with stainless.

11. Replace all fasteners with stainless (in spite of what some might say)

Other than that, I shall leave her well alone as she'll be just the bike that'll suit me.

Modify the odometer to read something north of 100k, while there are a few ways this could be done I recommend going after it by enjoying a great all around bike. I'm working on that with my PD and will be there some time in the next couple months.

On a more serious note, shelving the stock solo seat for a corbin is big bonus on the days when you want hit double digit hours in the saddle.

As for your top three list of ideal mods, they are all decent ideas if money were no object. I would keep riding it and do them when you have the time and money. If you are careful not to lug the tranny it can last forever in stock form. As for charging system unless you need more power to run lights/heated gear or spares for a major trip to the third world you can probably table that for now.

For the tow. I was burning fuel in prep of pulling the tank, about 25 miles from home. Tach dropped out, hit the passing lamp and got a quick engine cutout. Death followed at the next stop. Is it the battery (1.5 yrs.) or the aforementioned charging sys mods (not done)? A few mins on the trickle and she fired right up. I rode this bike to the MOA last July with no issues.

Had a similar experience earlier this year, turned out to be the rotor.

The fix was quick, it was the diagnostic procedure that took the time.

With ignition on does your charge bulb light up ?

light weight wrist pins,cheap should you do the work yourself.tall 5th gear,that you'll have the dealer do.makes the bike much smoother at speed.

A virgin GSPD that is working flawlessly.... I would preserve it. It's only original once.

I wanted to get a GS to mod so I got a good but not so perfect '89. I then modded the snot out of it.

Save the money on the Corbin just clamp a 2X12 on the frame and sit on it i think it would be more comfortable.

I run the stock seat on my GS - I actually don't mind it. The seat that I usually run is my dual Corbin - that one is much more comfortable for long distance riding days.
