NYC Area- Wanted: someone to paint my VFR- on the cheap!

Sooooo it has turned out I came into possession of a nice VFR 800 with some high miles but excellent mechanical condition. Bodywork is in good condition (with some scrapes on the bags but nothing serious, no cracks, dents in tank, etc- very straight body) only thing is it has a 10 y.o. OEM red, now kinda "orange-ey" color to it, you know, that faded Honda Red. I'd like to swap it over to maybe a nice black with a clear coat.

Can someone recommend an 'inexpensive' painter in the NY Area? I live in Westchester. If someone capable is an ameatuer that's fine too. Or a chop shop in the Bronx?

I dont mind doing prep work and paying for the materials and of course paying someone to do the work. I just don't have the space and aptitude to do this myself. Hard to paint without a heated garage/shop.


Other course may be just to spray paint it "stealth radar truck bed liner" myself in the carport.

Have you gotten quotes locally? If you take off the tank and plastics and bring them to a body shop they'll usually cut you a deal as its not much surface area or paint. How fancy of a job are you looking for.

Nothing fancy at all, the alternative is going to be me doing it on a harbor freight $20 spray gun in a dusty unheated garage, sooooo- just a couple coats of a nice gloss black and a couple clear coats. No color scheme or BS. Maybe a couple of HONDA decals on the tank clearcoated in, that's it.

You do know it's more than just shooting some paint on, right?

Each coat has to be hand sanded down with several diminishing grades of abrasives. Same for the primer coat that comes before them.

Yes, I know that- which is exactly why I want to have someone other than me do it- this is one of those things where you pay for both time/supplies as well as expertise. Of course the Honda shop CAN do your Desmo Valves, but do you really want them?

Your right about it being more than shooting some paint on but are completely wrong about hand sanding each coat.

When I had 2 classic cars painted, that's the way it was done. The finished job had depth and an incredible surface.

No one sands down base coat once its sprayed. No one. I have sprayed 2 or 3 layers of clear, bake, sand down the clear and then re sprayed another 2-3 coats of clear.

Prime, sand with 320 or 600 grit paper depending on what type of top coat your spraying, base and clear is normal. If your doing a restoration for someone intending to place the car in shows, then more sanding and clearing is needed. That's usually when a $6k paint job turns into a $10k paint job.

OK, then I guess it was the clear coats they were sanding, because there were a lot of clear coats too. They supposedly got down to 2000 grit.

One was an AC Cobra reproduction, and the other was a Shelby Mustang recreation. Both the same 1966 Ford colors, Guardsman Blue, with Wimbleton White stripes. And clear coat, lots of clear coat.

This thread reminds me of that joke about a yuppie who hires a day labrorer to paint his porch while the homeowner sits out back by the pool. He ttells the laborer that the 5 galloon bucket of paint and the brushes are in the garage.

A while later the laborer comes around back and asks for his pay, he is done painting. And remarks "But that wasn't a Porch, it was a Mercedes."
