Arkansas Road Tours

In this thread, we will post up trax for anyone interested in getting out and about on the scenic Ozarks roadways. Some of this stuff will wander in and out of southern Missouri also. So if you have anything to share, throw into the mix.

Would like to ask that you post a description of the route and also note if it is a ROUTE or a TRACK or BOTH. For those of you who download these gpx files, it is up to you to make sure that they work for you and are converted to what you prefer to use, ROUTE or TRACK.

We will "catalog" of what we. These will be in alphabetical order by city. Distance is shown in 3 digits.. Ex. 050 is 50 miles, 085 is 85 miles, etc. These are all pavement routes, the dirt stuff is in the SLAP Trax thread

Let me know if you find a link that is not working.

We will quarter the state, down the middle and half way up, NW, NE, SW, SE etc.

141-Top of the world, Bowels of the earth

This ride is 141 miles long and starts on hwy 71 in Fayetteville. Will take you down the scenic Pig Trail (hwy 23) to Ozark. You will ride west on hwy 64 to almost Van Buren where you will get on a little scenic back road, hwy 282. Why I call this, "Top of the world, Bowels of the earth" is because you will be way up on top above I-540, Top of the world, and then you wind on down into the valley and will go under the train tracks, bowels of the earth, by the swimming hole. You will then pass under I-540 and the massive near 200 foot tall bridge supports! Take a camera! Some good twisty roads!

143-ES to view the Elk

This 143 mile ride starts and ends in scenic Eureka Springs. Going south on hwy 23 to Huntsville, and if you have not eaten, be sure to stop at Grannys Restaurant (waypointed) for some good home cooked food. Continue south on hwy 23 to hwy 74 going east to Kingston. Get on hwy 21 and go SE to hwy 43 in the Boxley Valley. This is where the Buffalo River gets it's start. Keep watching east for a glimpse of our wild Elk.

Hwy 43 will take you thru Ponca and you will ride the top of the world. Be sure to stop at the over look and take in the farm land scenery.

219 Fayetteville to Hwy 123 and Mt Judea

This 219 mile route runs from Fayetteville over toward Jasper on under-traveled Hwy 16, down beautiful Hwys 374 and 123, then back toward Fayetteville via Hwy 74 (and the Elk in Ponca).
Between Fayetteville and Jasper, Hwy 16 runs along a ridge top for much of it's length, which you can clearly see if you ride this gem in the winter. Make sure to fill up with gas early on 16, as the stops are few and far between, and virtually nonexistent from the intersection of Hwy 16 and 23 all the way to Jasper!!!
Before you get to Jasper, the route will lead you up Hwy 327 thru Parthenon (another rarely-used and recently-paved route). Leaving Jasper on Hwy 7 south, you will take Hwy 374 to the east, and get your camera ready. This road drops through some great sweepers into a valley below before connecting with Hwy 123 in Mt Judea. When leaving Mt Judea, on Hwy 123 south, you'll be treated to some very tight switchbacks headed up the hill. After you pass these, keep your eyes open for a small little sign that says "Sam's Throne". Take this easy graveled route about 1/4 to the turn-around (bathrooms!), and take the short trail walk to view the cliffs and incredible view below. You will then ride Hwy 7 back up to Jasper (stop and look into the "Arkansas Grand Canyon" near the Cliffhouse restaurant), then you will head west on Hwy 74. After crossing the Buffalo River, keep your eyes peeled for elk in the pasture on the south side of Hwy 43/74.
Depending on when you leave Fayetteville, you can easily eat at Low Gap cafe (highly recommended!) or the motorcycle-famous Ozark Cafe.

The view off of 374

120 FYV to the Illinois River

This 120 mile loop starts on hwy 71 in Fayetteville and will take you thru scenic Weddington Woods before coming out in Siloam Springs. From there, go west on hwy 412 but be alert to STAY OFF THE TURN PIKE! There is a off ramp to do so and you should be on OK hwy 33. Take that to hwy 10, abt 5 miles, turn south on hwy 10 and skirt along the scenic Illinos River to Tahlequah. Several gas stops and food if you so need there. Getting back on hwy 62 going east, follow it back to Fayetteville going thru Lincoln and Praire Grove. Nice easy scenic tour.

153-Clarskville, Oark and hwy 123

This route will start you off in Clarksville, taking you up hwy 103 towards Oark. Good eating here and made famous for being on the TAT (Trans-America-Trail). From there, go west on scenic hwy 215 (TAT) along with the Mulberry River to the Pig Trail (hwy 23). Turn north to hwy 16 EAST thru Deer Arkansas. No silly, not a herd of deer, the little community of Deer Turn south on scenic hwy 7 to curvy hwy 123 south back to Clarksville. Take your camera! Be sure to stop and take in the scenery on the old single lane bridge crossing the Big Piney River, waypointed.

332 Siloam Springs to Branson Loop

This is one of my favorite day trips. I have this starting out in downtown Siloam Springs by the park. It goes north to SW City MO and over to Branson via Hwy's 90 and 76 through the Mark Twain National Forrest. Then down to Harrison and south on Hwy 7 to Hwy 16 and back through Fayetteville and back to Siloam. Lots of variations south of Harrison on return trip and can be combined with some other trips here. This is an all day trip.
