My 1000 km Weekend

The last 4 actual riders of the Kiwi Biker BFTP group met up for a few beers and some story telling...
It was pouring with rain on Friday as I got my new tyre fitted......started to have second thoughts....But by the time they finished it has eased off and away I went down the motorway over the Bombays....where Adventure begins..... Got off SH1 asap and stopped for a piccy in the middle of nowhwere...

It rained on an off until I reached Taumaranui.....where it really bucketed down....
The Napier lads arrived about an hour later after going over the not so Gentle Annie.....
We gassed up and headed down the Forgotten Highway.....even did a bit of gravel....

The rain stopped and road dried out....stopped at our base for the weekend...

Had a few beer, dinner and more beers....
Hit the road the next day for Stratford and did a loop of Mt Taranaki.

Then it was back to the Hotel for a much deserved beverage....
But........then the shock bush came out...

But limped back as a mono shock.....they are over rated me thinks..

Bloke in the town had a nice old Laverda

We went thru a tunnel..... Rhys had just flown down to Motueka to buy his R80 and was very pleased with it.

I stopped to marvel at the food wandering around the field....never been nearer than Pak n Save before.....and so far to next gas station....

We found a really neat road to Ohura that was like riding thru the English countryside.... I did not envy my Suzuki GS 850 mate dragging his lump of iron around those corners.....
Then it was TeKuiti for lunch and home.
Man I'm tired today...those old bikes are not comfortable to ride a long way.
Mind you 26 kms per litre on the last leg at 100 kmph......68 MPG......
Awesome weekend though...
..there was even an earthquake on Saturday morning.....was like a ripple went thru the Hotel....
It was nice to get back on the R65 this morning for work....much more comfortable.

R80 from Motueka you say ? Did he get it from a guy named Pete ?
If so, I know the guy and that will be a very good bike. The guy doesn't cut corners and spent a bit of coin on it
I was actually tempted when I saw it getting a check over at the local dealers

Very cool thanks for posting

You know if you had the photo app that aged those photos it could look like it was straight out of the 70s.
I love that laverda - great tank.

He is a retired aircraft engineer I gather. Probably the same one as Rhys the new owner had it checked out at a dealers. He's really happy with it.

Old and/or uncomfy bikes with dubious reliability make any trip seem longer and more of a journey/challenge.

Watched a Commando take off from the lights on Saturday. Pretty sure they are the nicest sounding bike there is.

cheers for the write up.

Whanga is kind of like a time warp. You guys would feel right at home. You should have pooled your small change & bought Ohura. Looks like a great weekend

$85k....65 sq metre garage with 3 phase.... 3200 metres....close to Cossie Club....I noticed they had a DB sign...how retro.
We could have a bikers holiday home.
Some great roads in the area... only and hour from the ski fields.
However....probably no work unless you drive for that long as well.....

You forgot to mention the "Parking for up to 8 cars on drive". But joking aside, it's very tidy and would make a great base for adventure riding. We talk about every time we go through there. The must be excellent pig hunting in the bush, judging be the number I've seen on the back roads.
