Wink Nothing to See on the Plains?

I've never spent a lot of time in S.E. Colorado. Hunted around Kim a few times. That was just enough to wet the appitite. So with a few days off, I loaded up the WeeStrom and headed out. Taking back roads toward LaJunta. Really nice riding down past Elbert, and the Calhan hwy. Pretty nice out toward Punkin Corners. The weather was nice, in the 60's, barely used the heated gear. I had been informed that there was no place to camp at Picketwire Canyon, however they have just built a nice campground on the rim. No tables yet, but everything else is there, and it's FREE, and NO one else was there.

Absolutely wonderful views. Someone was even kind enough to leave some firewood for me. The most complete set of Dinosaur tracks in the world are in Picketwire Canyon. If you are familiar with Moab, Klondyke Bluffs have maybe 20-30 tracks, Picketwire has some 1300 tracks. But bring your hicking boots, over 5 miles hick each way.

This is an old stage stop and not far from here you can see the tracks that are still visible form the 1870's. Supose this is fragile land?

You can see the tracks behind the Wee.

Sunsets are a plus out here.

And winter nights are cold and the days are short. I certainly would not suggest adding this to your campfire

The next day I headed down to Picture canyon. Actually planning a big loop from Picket Wire down through Springfeild,Co and Picture canyon then comming back through Carrizo Canyon. Probably too much for a winter day, but the Wee has great lights, so some dark riding was doable.

This is the entrance to Picture canyon.

There is a nice picknick/camp ground at Picture canyon. The road in here for Campo was horrible. Some of the worst washboard with deep mixture of sand and gravel on it. With the loaded Wee and being by myself, and no cell coverage, i thought more than once, "this is crazy, if I fall no one will come along and find me for a week". A Spot is on the Christmas list.

Back up through Carrizo Canyon to Kim. The advertised Auto Tour is not the best part of Carrizo Canyon. But most of it is private property, and the County rds go through private property. But most of the county roads are good roads.

There was an amazing full moon every night. No light polution down here, yet.

Mornings were bright and cold, but the highs were in the low 60's.

The morning I was heading home was real cold. So I had coffee in bed as the sun came up

I didn't have a thermometer, but when I got to LaJunta the bank sign said 27 degrees. But it's always colder in the valley. The ride home was very windy as a cold front was starting to come through. I certainly enjoyed having heated gear that day.

Some very nice places to camp and explore down there. Lots of uncrowded county roads, ruins etc. Hot in summer, but nice days the rest of the year. Bring plenty of water!
