I think next time I will head to Apishipa Canyon. It's a state area instead of federal. Part of it is state wildlife area. I understand the access to motor vehicles is better.

cool! i'm sure mornings are wicked cold this time of year out that way.
good to know about that camp spot. i've know about the canyons of the purgatoire river for years, but like most of us around here have never wandered out that way. always seems this time of year, when the mtns are closing out with snow, the interest out east comes up again. i know you know there are also some canyons farther south along the NM & OK border areas plus the comanche national grasslands. http://www.springfieldcolorado.com/canyons.html here is GM for others to see: https://maps.google.com/?ll=37.28060...469177&t=p&z=9
