Hi/Lo Beam Switch Wiring Q

Why does the switch have three wires coming out of it when all it really is, is an on-off switch for the hi-beam?

That's not how it normally works. It's usually a selector switch. It takes the lights on hot wire and connects it either to the hi beam wire or the lo beam wire. An on/off switch for the hi beam alone would have the lo on also when the hi is selected. That would be unusual. A flash to pass switch on the hi beam in often like that though.

In some markets you can ride with the lights off. So in that case you select high or low beam.

Not necessarily. For example, All V-Stroms have two headlights. Each is either high beam only or low beam only depending on the hi/lo switch position. Choose high and the low beam goes off. Running the low beam and turning on the flash to pass switch will add the high beam. What model and yer bike do you have?

Either the low beam or the high beam is always on when the bike's running.

Ninja 250 with two lamps. One points more horizontal (HI) than the other (LO). The LO stays on when the HI is on.

Yeah, but in UK you can ride with the lights turned off.

There is a switch on the right switch that is lights off/parking lights on/ headlights on.

This feeds 12v to the centre of the hi/low switch on the right switch.

The 12v goes to either the low or high bulb, not both.
