XRL breakdown outside a Hooters. Clutch?

I am sitting on a bench at a Hooters after my 02 XRL stopped putt-putting.

I was riding to grab some dinner and tight after I blared my horn at some idiot and when I came back off the clutch, a pathetic groan, grind, and Chris is broken down.

Tried prayer and running through the gears (the cycled through fine) but when I released the clutch lever, nothing except an unhappy bike groaning and going not forward.

I don't have enough time on my new-to-me XRL to diagnose.

What's your diagnosis, doctors?

how does the countershaft sprocket spines look? check if the sprocket is stripped is one thing i would check first.

I dumped the bike in a shed at a used car lot (god bless them) so I will check tomorrow when I have light and tools. Actually, that's sort of what it feels like. Something stripped.

Thank you. Maybe I did strip the splines off. I will have them check that. Here's what another buddy said, could this also be true?

The shop you take it to will know what exactly is wrong as soon as the take the clutch side cover off. I think that the previous worker didn't properly stake the clutch basket center nut (#17 in the diagram). With the motor vibration, that nut spun off, clattered about in the side a bit, and then fell down the bottom. At that point, you have no more clutch pressure, so no friction from the clutch pack.


Two other possibilities:
• clutch basket exploded (not noisy enough + not enough grinding)
• chain between motor and transmission failed (very unlikely - it's a really good, solid chain)

Assuming I'm right, so long as the damage to the clutch basket & case/cover wasn't too bad when the nut came off, the shop should be able to put it back down really easily. If they even question whether it's a warranty issue, tell them you want to watch dude take the side cover off. I'll bet you see that nut in the bottom.
