Iranian police shovelheads

I have just finished scanning some prints from a trip I made to India in 1994 and thought I would share a photo I took of this fleet of even then ageing shovelheads belonging to the police force of the city of Shiraz, Iran. They must have been pre-79 and the mechanic who was working on them said they had to make their own spares because of sanctions, I wonder if any of them are still on the road?

In the 90's, when I had a motorcycle shop, I had a German customer who brought me a couple of those shovelheads that he had purchased while doing some engineering work in Iran. I was stunned to see how they were modified. I think it took me 20 hours of labor to repair just the engine casing on one of the motors! The rest of the bike was similarly screwed.
I remember one of the clutch, throw-out bearings had been assembled with pieces of indeterminate thrust bearings and what appeared to be most of the tube of silicone sealer! What a blob! Around that time, I had another customer import a panhead that he had purchased for a great price from someone in Cuba. The box that he brought to my shop looked like a rough hewn coffin, and the parts inside were useless bits of pan and shovel parts. His brother, another brilliant banker, brought me his bike, saying the oil light had something wrong with it, cause it was on all the time.....didn't like the repair estimate when I told him that there was no oil in the motor.....
What memories. Thanks for posting the pic.

I heard the other day that 90% of all Harley's are still on the road, the rest made it home safely. Maybe in Iran it's a different story?

If they don't it certainly won't be because they can't afford the petrol, it was 8 cents a gallon there in 1994

Wow I must have been really luck to own about 25 of the 10%. They all made it home and I never had one break down on me.
