freight or ferry SF->Canada or Alaska?
So I only have two-three weeks vacation and started thinking about possibly going to Alaska. Wondering if there is a possibilty to travel by freighter or ferry to Canada or Alaska? I'm only coming up with cheesy cruises.

AFAIK, the nearest point from which you can embark on a ferry to Alaska is Bellingham, WA -- about 900 miles north of here or a 2-day ride if you don't mind slabbing it (1 day if you're a SS1000 contender).

Need 4 weeks for Grand Tour
Alaska Ferry takes 4 days wether commin or goin. https://www.dot.state.ak.us/oars/res...?action=search Fare $337 Bike $57 this is bycycle, they do not list motorcycle?? Cabin $400 outside Only saves a couple days but I may try it sometime comming home for the scenery and rest. Takes 7 - 8 days to ride to Whitehorse up Hwy 37 (all roads to Alaska go thru Whitehorse). In 2010 I rode both ways to D2D in Dawson City, then went out Dempster to the Artic Circle, back to DC and over the Top of the World Hwy to Tok, south to Haines, took 2 hr ferry to Skagway and back down Hwy 37 in 17 days http://www.advrider.com/forums/showt...ht=doug+dawson Headed up for 3rd trip north to this years D2D. http://advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=830583 See you on the road or at D2D ???

I used Alaska Ferry Adventures to assist with the Alaska Marine Hwy decisions & to buy the tickets. Not only do they sell the tics for the same price that you can get elsewhere but more importantly they can help you get the right tics w/o wasting time deciphering the schedules,etc.. They are in AK & know the state well. Don't buy a cabin unless you like to waste money-esp if you'll have a tent or at least a sleeping bag. Sleep on the aft deck on a lounge where the scenery takes place. In your time frame you could go to SE AK at the point the hwy becomes available & the take road back home or into other parts of AK then back south. You can get off at nice choices such as Juneau & Ketchican and spend good time sightseeing.

Motorcycles are in the 10' and under catagory.
My sig line has a thread link about riding our ferries and other ride reports if you're interested. If you only have 2wks, it might be better to fly and rent depending on what you want to see. Good luck and have fun, Mark H. |
