Question Border San Carlos Nicaragua to LosChiles Costa Rica

Has anybody tried going from Nica to Costa Rico at this crossing? I came up through PB, took hours, and am hoping this way back south will be less stressful. I have the documents I obtained when entering and leaving CR if that helps. Do I have to put the bike on a boat? What is the road like, is gas available on that side of the lake?

not sure if that would be a good idea. it's a small crossing and you have to cross by boat. also, apparently you cannot buy tico insurance in los chiles, so you have to leave the bike and take a bus to some city to buy the insurance and then bus it back. pain in the nutsack...

If you still have valid Costa-Rica insurance, it is a nice way to return.
Boat incl you is $ 40.00 and is a nice 1 hour steam up the river.
The Costa Rica side is laid back and you would be able to process your bikes papers, but the way you sound, you still have yours in the Costa Rica computer!
Gas no problem and it is a good road all the way south where ever you plan to go!
Last year the road was almost paved all the way with a brand new tarmac on the Nicaragua side (East side of the lake), all the way from Managua

and then there's the ongoing border dispute between the "sandinista youth" and the ticos. i'll ask my friends if they have any info on the area these days. in recent history, el comandante whoreteaga sent troops to the rio san juan area of nica...

Yes I still have my CR papers, so it sounds doable providing the border is open. My PB crossing was a nightmare, anything else would be preferable! Ill probably leave Granada tomorrow or Friday.

according to my friend who owns property in the area, the crossing is open. here is what he wrote. (you can translate with google if necessary)
