In terms of value, original paint, even slightly faded or a little scratched, is worth more than a repaint. Even a really nice one.

A friend of mine recently had his 1000 repainted , it had already been painted red , so , no loss to originality. He was asking for sugestion so, I said "How about the first Z-1 paint scheme ? Root Beer Brown and Orange, "
And that's how it was painted. The guy did a great job on ther layout , the brown could have used a little more metallic {bigger} but, overall it looks great and people flock to it.
I have a '75 Z1B in the blue scheme. I really liked it stock, but I repainted it several times because there were so many around I wanted to be different. If I could find some stock paint bodywork now , I'd try to buy it.

If this was a 1929 HD in original paint I would keep it that way but a 76 KZ900 isn't exactly a true collectable so I am going to paint it, the question is what year and color paint scheme.
exhaust aside the bike looks untouched. kerkers were so common they're almost like oem. I'd leave the paint till last and think long and hard about painting it. I'm sure it doesn't look that good up close but it's still pretty decent. keep the original's and be patient and wait for body parts on ebay. paint them unless you can find better oem. I'm partial to that vintage Kaw having worked at a dealer in 76 and owned a 75 H1 new. I remember the 76 LTD 900 and it was "one year only" but we didn't know that next year they would be LTD 1000's and sell like hot cakes. LTD 1000's were the big 4 four cyl to have late 70's and everyone ran a kerker.

Thanks Flug - Of course I will keep the Kerkers(but I will install the 4 into 4's), and tho I have decided to paint it, I will be going with the correct 76 colors and scheme. Thanks for your input.

Finished

3 months later... Photos don't do it justice but I will post anyway. Mike Kukura painted the bike and Jim at Redline Cycle did the tough mechanical stuff I couldn't do. Both are very good and reliable and honest and skilled...
It really sounds good with the 4 into 4 pipes. it has removable baffles but I won't be removing them. They sound perfect.
