US was downright embarrassing last year.
I saw a few games when they were in Saskatoon last, and I wish the tourney was more widely televised down here. Some really great hockey - more so this year, with the 19 yo kids who would be in the NHL, all playing. |

TSN is showing Canada Germany Live at 0130 Pacific time then Russia Slovakia at 0600. Of course it's our National Winter sport/religion.

I missed the game, but it'll be on again later today. Getting 9 goals is good but giving up 3 to a weak team, not so much, but it's a good start.

My daughter stayed up to watch it. I was up before 5 to work today so I missed it live. I see Jenner is staying with he team despite his suspension.

USA and Russia live streaming right now on NHL.com.
These guys can all really skate, great hockey to watch. |

Canada played one of the worst periods of hockey that I can remember in this tournament, they woke up though and pulled off a good win. Big games coming up to meet the USA squad and the Russians on NYs EVE.

Looks like Canada, Russia and USA but I have been surprised at some poor play by all 3. I thought that Russia was all over the Slovak team but were luck to win. I do love the large ice surface. The reffing not so much.

So far I am unimpressed by my decision to wake up in the middle of the night to watch hockey.

Good game, always nail bitting near the end. Big win for Canada.
Time to go back to bed.......

Got exciting at the end, lot's of penalties. Great goaltending at both ends. Wonder when we'll see Subban in a Bruins jersey.

More coherent thoughts on the USA team now that I've slept some and had some coffee:
Forwards are undersized, which hurts the forecheck. Seth Jones stood out to me on the blue line, calm, measured, effective. The goalie had a great game. If they get the same goaltending tmrw, and get just a little more offense, they should have a good result. Hard to imagine the Slovak goalie playing as well as Subban did, I thought he was superb. Gotta get my ass up early to watch the Slovakia game tomorrow. |

Great game. Both goalies played well.
It will be interesting to see if refs continue to mother the Europussies. Russians will be diving all over the ice no doubt. |

I woke up partway thru the first period of USA vs. Slovakia and the US was already up 4-1.
It was never close, as Slovakia had no interest in defending the high slot or the middle of the neutral zone, and the US just skated wherever they pleased. Not a good tune-up for the next round, as it was sloppy, soft, hockey that encouraged selfish play. I'm not optimistic.
