XL600R: bad contact on the stator
Hello to all,
are about a couple of weeks that I follow this forum (and also Thumper Talk), I decide to ask for advice. I have a '84 XL600R I'd like to restore. I took it for a few euro from a colleague who wanted to throw it away. It's been off for a couple of years. I was able to turn it on for a couple of times, then stop. The spark is very weak. I measured the resistance of the alternator (ignition circuit) which value is higer than 319ohms. The strange thing is it changes each time I kick on the kickstarter, last sunday I measured these values: 5.54k, 16.6k, 7.28k, 8.10k. There seems to be a bad contact. The winding generates 44 Volts RMS. Any suggestions or opinions? Moreover the pulse generator resistance is of 368 ohms, should i replace it? P.S. Has this forum a section where I can introduce myself? |

XL600 Stator
Sorry. For some reason I thought you had a XR instead of the XL. I used to have a XL600 and my stator went bad as most do. Best thing to do is simply replace the stator and I'll bet 99% of your problems will go away. If you can get a Ricky Stator you'll be in business.
http://www.rickystator.com/catalog/h...bly-p-105.html I'm not sure if Ricky Stator ships out of the USA. If not I can buy it for you and then send it to you if you can't find one on your side of the world.

Be careful with dealing with XR's Only. They don't have the best customer service. The stator shown in the above post is listed for both the XR600 and XL600. The stators for these bikes are different and Ricky Stator has different part #'s for each model.

What's your opinion about the pick up coil? The resistance value seems low to me, but in any case I can see a weak spark, so it should works. Happy New Year |

The stator it's self may be the same between the XR and XL but the harness connectors are for sure different. XR has bullet connectors and the XL has a plastic gang connector. IIRC.

I got mine from XR's Only, I did have to pay extra shipping as their cart didn't do international shipping correct but once we got that straight it came in a reasonable amount of time.
XR600 though. Still have my rewound one in there, but it is nice to have the Ricky for spares!
