KLR Side rack question, HELP!

so i have a deliema guys.

theres a guy semi locally that has a set of hard alu panniers for my bike that i can get in trade (including a windshield w/adjustable mounts and custom seat, lowered by 1" and has 1" of memory foam in it). panniers are 18x9 and 15" deep. these were mounted to a set of Packrat Racks, and since those are pretty good/cheap i was just going to grab those and put it all together.

my quandary is this: i need luggage, because i take a lot of trips. i prefer the hard stuff to stay on the bike and ill probably leave some gear in it for "just in case". i even figure ill mount some lights to them. but wouldnt this make the bike wide as hell? i already know itll be permanently rear heavy.

so my question is this: make the trade and buy the racks, going the cheaper/more permanent route or forego the trade and buy a set of soft bags and side racks which is by far more expensive. this would LOOK better because i could take off the bags...i just dont know...

i do have a set of soft bags for now, but i need more space and a bit more weather protection. does anyone have any issues with the width of the bike after the hard bags are put on?

help me!!!

Security?

If security is not a problem for you then the soft bags are lighter, usually cheaper and more versatile ( on and off with no permanent rack, roll up small if empty.. etc..) on the other hand if you want the "look" of something more solid to store stuff in ( lets say you want to pick up some groceries ) but have your laptop with you, then the boxes certainly give me a ease of mind. As for them being to wide... well I mostly smash them up when getting around those pesky steel gates... You can change the mounting hardware most likely to a easy off kind for funner riding. Just my thoughts. I'm sure some other KLR folks will have a different view. For me I went hard box so I could leave my bike parked at a trail head for a few days without as much worry. But it defiantly impacts performance. Good luck.
