R1150GS Adventure Backfire w/ new Exhaust

I bought a Remus Y pipe and Staintune muffler off of an inmate several months ago and I can't ask him for advice, because I deleted all the PMs about the buy. I finally got around to removing the cat and the stock muffler and installed these two. There seems to be a lot of back pressure from the sound and some decent backfires as well. I dug around here and found a picture of the Steptoe jumper from 5 to 6 and made one of those and it still seems to be running the same. The baffle from the Staintune muffler was removed by the previous owner, but I have it.

Typically caused by an air leak in the system. Make sure all your exhaust joints are tight but it seems like I've read this a lot where folks have installed a Y-pipe.

Is it backfire or afterfire? Typically removing the cat and opening up the exhaust will cause the amount of after fire to increase a lot. Afterfire is on deceleration, or just slichtly off idle throttle when slowing in gear. If this is the case, this is perfectly normal.

Agree as above, air leaks would be my first and main suspect.

It might be after fire. It seems a little sluggish off idle though also and sounds a bit muffled. Aside from putting your hand by the exhaust connections how do you check for exhaust leaks?

it can also be a lean condition this is increased when opening up the exhaust,
my 2001 1150GS also has a pop when on decel or mostly when closing the throttle.
My bike has a full Staintune system from the end of the header pipes to the muffler.

I have a Y-Pipe and mine backfires if I abruptly close the throttle after hard acceleration.

I consider it an added benefit.

+1. Steptoe jumper mod does not seem to help twin spark engines. The lean condition if uncorrected may cause pinging later when it gets hotter out. I would look into either the wideband dynojet (I have this on my 02 GSA) or Rogers LC1 mod (add-on wideband), these both fool the ECU into running a wideband O2 sensor @ 13.8 AFR (or whatever you set it to) and eliminates most backfires as well as pinging. Plus it runs a hell of a lot smoother and stronger (and quieter).
