You could, if you had prearranged it with a race official under the excuse that you need to take the engine out of the frame to rebuild the top end. But in that case I doubt that the Dakar officials would tweet that he in fact DID change the engine when all he wanted to do was to rebuild the top end. =)

EDIT: And - as I understand it - the whole process of removing the engine from the frame would have to be supervised by a race official all the way until it's back in the frame and sealed again.

Speed control penalty in the special? only one I could think of would be "not gong fast enough"

I've been going back (last five minutes) and looking at the actual chronological live passage times at the WP's (old school method) and it seems that it's NOT Despres that had a problem his times are consistent with those following and in order.

It appears that between WP2 and WP3 Chaleco has gone ahead (warp speed) and pulled ahead (pysically) 10 minutes out of the time/space continuum...

So I am putting the suggestions forward... a) data entry misstake ie: a physical time of 10:52:43 - not 10:42:43 as the trackers show - seems more like it?

or b) if Chaleco has pulled out ten minute gap on the road at the front... has he found an abbreviated sector of the route somewhere along the way?

Francisco López takes the penultimate special of the 2013 Dakar ahead of Spain's Joan Barreda, who lies in a provisional second place, 1'05" back. Cyril Despres is third at 2'20", followed by Paulo Gonçalves at 3'05". But we're waiting for some of the protagonists of today's special to finish in order to confirm this classification.

At the moment, Ruben Faria holds the second best time at the finish of the first part of the special, 32" behind Francisco López. Joan Barreda is third, 8" behind the Portuguese rider. Frans Verhoeven, who was in the Top 3 at the previous checkpoints, has yet to finish.

Yeah don't forget about the crepes. CDP may have stopped to make some chocolate crepes for the other riders cos he's such a nice guy (this year) during the stage and so lost time to Chaleco (who missed out on his crepe in his haste to finish in front). That's my guess.
