The guy I wish I could ask about this is Pyndon, he's built some monster CRFs for Supermoto. But he's not answering my call!

My sense is that it gets very tricky to build power beyond a certain point that can be trusted to be reliable. The start can be blueprinting/ porting/ careful assembly, which will yield a motor that makes more power than stock and also is more reliable than stock... but going very far down the road of more compression/ more cam/ bigger valves (the standard route for HP, and what's needed for big top speed in sand) yields something that is going to let go eventually.

The exception to this are the factories, who can carefully develop solutions on a dyno and with suppliers that the rest of us don't have access to.

Honda (and KTM) know how to make power that will last. However, the years of developing fuel strategy at KTM seem to have paid off yesterday.

for the Dakar, unless you are in a top 30 mind frame then I would make it failsafe. Getting older now and nowhere near fast enough but if I were to do the Malle Moto think before i was 50 then i would consider a engine with DRZ reliability. You can throw it down the road, you can pee in the tank, you can drown it, for 10000 km no service, that would be the way to go.

WOuld it be the most fun? the most nimble ? hell no. But would it reduce your chances of blowing an engine in the middle of nowhere? for sure.

Barreda looks like he's really suffering opening up the stage today.

He has been bumped down to 23rd at WP2, +6.35

Still too young to lead Dakar stages?

One mistake is all it takes. How long does it take to realise you have to be wrong? 3-4 min maybe? Then he has to backtrack, and 6 minutes will run up very fast I guess.

Yes, Belaustegui with the 2-stroke ktm should be starting.

Seems some problem for Verhoven.

Good recovery from Chaleco Lopez, also from Pizzolito (at least in forst part of the stage)

Me too but you start to nip after 25 minutes of wide open.
