Quinn Cody on FB did the math on Kurt's winning ride. Puts Despres problems in perspective: a shitty stage to lose 5th gear:

Quinn Cody
‎Kurt Caselli absolutely killed it on stage 7 of Dakar today so stoked for him. Crazy fast stage, Kurt averaged 72.88mph for 135 miles, just to put in perspective on how fast they are going a winning average speed for Baja 1000 about 54mph, even the fastest segments in Baja we rarely average just over 70mph. Wide open!

Questions:

Is there a Parc Fermée tonight? There's no assistance, but can the pilots touch their bikes? If not, the KTM people (Faria, Caselli, Despres and Pedrero) would have to try to sort the boss's gearbox on the liaison to the Marathon bivouac, right?

If the gearbox is not sorted and given the 338 kms timed Special Stage tomorrow, Cyril will bury his victory chance tomorrow :popcorn and Ruben Faria will be KTM's best shot at it (or Lopez, if he is counted in). ...

It is roughly x1,6
so 72.88mph is about 116,608km/h on a 220km distance

Faria has paid his dues (and then some), I hope that he's allowed to go for the win.

Good point. They can work on their bikes all they want. And it's not only Faria, Caselli, Despres and Pedrero, but also the "factory B team" of Curtis, van Niekerk and Przygonski. In theory, all of them could be ordered to help from the team bosses.

In practice, we know nothing about the actual team orders in place right now. Until last year, we knew a rider's own water carrier would be asked to give everything up for his chief rider, but with Faria going on today, everything's open.

Oh, how I would like a phone call with Alex Doringer now.

I 'm certain maintenance by riders is allowed on the Marathon stage bivouac, I seem to recall they get a bag taken there for them in which they can put a bottle of oil, oil filter and air filter.

I theory, CdP could swap engines with a water carrier, they both get a 15 minute penalty but Cyril is good to go and the WC gets a long slow ride tomorrow!

And should the WC complain?

Yep! bound to be in the contract
