How about a round of applause for Esquerre, who would have guessed that no 92 would be honda's flag bearer on the 9th stage...

KTM will want Faria on the podium (IIRC Faria even stated on a pre race interview that this was his goal (alongside with helping the Boss). THe question now is - in which step of the podium? Will gearbox longevity play a part of this? How is Marek Dabrovsky changing gears must CD be thinking now

I believe that it was Despres himself that said in an interview yesterday that KTM should turn Faria loose as he's doing so well....maybe it was Coma but, one of them...

Can you ride like an alien for the rest of the race on a used motor?

Don't forget, it's just the bottom end not the whole motor.

I was going to say it would be spicy if non-factory Yamaha have won Dakar with three factory teams involved. But with today's bad luck for Casteu and Pain I'm not going to say that.

Luis in 139th place starting today....139 riders started...GO LUIS

49 riders dnf in the first half...40 more in second half if history repeats itself.

The race is on for the back of the pack folks. The real Dakar is unfolding, I wish we had as much attention given to them as we do the energy drink crowd.

That was Coma, but he also said it would be a difficult KTM decision... the big question mark for the 2nd week

I noticed a big change in attitude both in the bivouac and also out on the course after the rest day.

Before, people were friendly and helped when they could, but people were caught both in the fever of competition, and also still acclimating to the flavors and rhythm of the race.

After, people know where they are supposed to be, how things work, and while a few riders are still trying to sort themselves out at the front, there is much more espirit de'corps in the back of the pack. We have been through so much together, we have seen so many things, and now we all want to finish.

At the same time, the pressure is mounting. Each km is placing another card atop a stack that is already quite high. Equipment may start to show its age in a million ways, both minor and major, and the body is certainly letting you know about the trials of the previous week.

Turning my attention to my favorite competitor, what a great ride. I'm thrilled to see him putting in consistent times today, it means he didn't let the result change his approach. I always knew he was going to go better on this side of the Andes- the terrain will agree quite well with him and the pistes are much easier to race on for those of us without extensive HP experience (Hors Piste/ No trail).

I think it is wonderful for Lyndon that his dad is his mechanic. Of course, part of that is because his dad is a great mechanic (where do you think Pyn learned his tricks?) but also because each evening, he gets to reanchor himself with the rest of his world. Ted, Tim, and Robb helped me with that on my race, and it was more important than they might ever know. I saw other guys adrift, when they weren't gelling with the mechanics/ team they were with... not the case for Pyn!

They are just now at half race distance. There's so much done, yet so much more to come.
