In 2007 and 2008 I raced 3 desert rallies against CDP, I use that term loosely as he was obviously at the other, sharper end of the peleton. Each night in the bivvy he would queue up in line for dinner like everyone else, freely chat with anyone who engaged him in conversation and be approachable to all!
On a number of stages with multiple loops it was a pleasure to see him pass me by, dueling with Coma and it is awesome to experience the speed and grace at which these professional sportsmen go about their day job.
What is also clearly obvious when you actually put yourself in to the arena instead of commenting from behind a keyboard is how terrifying riding at speed is in the desert! I have the utmost respect for these guys and how they feed their families and if you were to witness them at full chat, 170kms over rocky ground then you may not be so quick to judge them when they are in their 'zone'.
A lot rests in their hands at the DSS, not least their life and livelyhood.
Let's be thankful we still have true heroes in this sanitised world!

I hesitate to discuss the video feed side of things outside the media thread, but has anyone been had the honor of being able to watch the raw feeds that are tailor made for each market? Some great additional footage included and it really gives a very neat view of the different perspectives by which the nationalities package their show. For instance, the Russian feed showed nothing but trucks, the dutch feed was all over the place and even showed the commentator playing with toys int he dirt, but the extra bikes footage is priceless.
