I was responsible for fleet maintenance for a couple of years. It was evident that when one truck failed for a component, all in that series would usually follow. Rarely was it a one off.

That's why the question.
Cyril statet that he hits a stone and after that he had no 5th gear if I'm right. So it would be no "natural" weak spot...

Pyndon threw wp2, seems to be holding a mid 30's placing

Against a guy who is opening the track, I would assume the exact opposite is happening ... Huskies started in 2nd and 7th, Barreda has yet to catch Cyril on the track. The boss is flying today.

I'll have to go back to some earlier stages, but IIRC anyone opening any of the previous days failed to post the top time in the first third of that stage (as Cyril did today from WPs 1 to 3)...

No, I think today is finally the day where we might possibly witness a masterclass in how to open a stage, and if not win it, then at least limit the damage from the guys in the back.

Concerning Barreda's speed, he is undoubtedly fast, and alien material, but he's in a position where he has no hope of the podium, so can take more risks, think Robbie G for example...

That's the thing, it can be. If a weakness in the protection can be identified in post-analysis, he can take steps to prevent a future occurrence.

And that measure, reported to the riders, is a metal reassurance as to the reliability of the machine they trust their lives to.

taking 9 seconds off the guy opening the course in front of you, after approximately 100kms is nothing. I might even call it underperforming
